Black base

Finally i can use the last half gallon of spi black base coat I've been holding onto like food rashons for many years now..
So we should expect base and single stage for June????? I'm overly excited!!!

I think, that is a good goal, I'm hoping to release the flat clear, white, and black base and SS at the same time.

All this takes time and the flattening agent took way more time and testing then I thought it would, so it has slowed me down on the other projects.

On top of this a key employee had to have an emergency operation and was out for a few weeks and that meant, I had to assume his duties in making batches and this put me behind the eight ball.
If that was not enough, sales went thought the roof in April and we were putting out batches as fast as we could to keep inventory at a safe level and even with that inventory dropped about $400,000 so we are still trying to get back to normal level of made inventory.

Never say die, we are getting there.

damn i was getting ready to order some ppg toyota jet black. customer wants the blackest black...

At this point the black base will not be legal for CA or Canada, the SS will, I plan on working on a legal base sometime this year.

Also Other colors?????????

I want ideas from all of you BUT we will not be making spray-outs and need colors where we are not going to get killed with calls as an example comparing this color to this color.
Could this mean we are stuck with just Black and White? Ideas please.

We just cannot handle a bunch of those calls, without an employee ------*-------.

tell the whiners to use shrink and wrinkle . i found it was pretty simple, this is spi red enough said. no need for spray outs or comparisons. but then your going to get the anal ones who fret and worry over shade value and all that crap.
i think black, red and orange pretty much covers colors. not sure how well the blue and yellow sold.

we could give cooter a cell phone and let him take those calls .\/.

My vote would be Dark Blue or Silver or both lol. Black, White, Red, Dark Blue, and Silver pretty much all I spray.... But I don't spray enough to make it worth while...

You should have never said you can make the most killer blue. My Mustang would look awesome in it. SPI metallic pearl blue I'll sign up for 2 gallons :)

a metallic blue, green, red, and a gun metal gray would be my suggestions.

I agree with Shine. There is only one SPI red, and it sounds like there will be only one SPI black, and one SPI white. End of story. So what is so different about other colors after they have been decided on?

Barry,

Would it make any sense to sell just certain toners and then just post color formulations on the SPI website, so that people can mix their own colors?

When you mentioned that you could make some blues that would make HOK cry, it got me thinking that it would be nice to be able to buy said blue toners and just follow formulas to create the colors. Makes me wonder how many different toners you would need to make 3 different shades of blue for example.

Maybe it's juts too complicated and a whole new can of worms from an inventory perspective, you got enough to worry about as it is.

ever seem a mixing bank ??????

I sure have.... With Wanda I use 40+ toners, Spies is around 70? give or take, and every time I see a Matrix one with around 100 tints it just makes me scratch my head.

I was only wondering how many toners it would take to make say 3 different blues, but I see your point, just too damn complicated in the end.

Actually, at the urging of one of our longtime jobbers who has three different mixing systems brought this up for SS about 5 years ago.

His idea was up to ten tints to make popular solid SS colors.
I looked serious at this and it turned out it was not practical money wise at all.

It is a great idea but what happens with the way "we go to market", if say Chad as an example does not want the tint system because he has pro-spray and one of his customers wants a few colors?
If we were to ship the customer, I think with good reason, Chad would hire Cooter from shine to come to GA.

Thoughts that crossed my mind as an example, A dark red to go with the SPI Red like say guards red or Ferrari Red.

Make the old SPI Orange into Hugger, so people know what color it is.

One nice blue, like daytona blue used on the older vette.

Viper or screaming yellow but the yellows were not a real good selling color for us, when we had three.

VW silver?

That color has crossed my mind a few times, not sure if that or VW silver, I have to watch volume as I don't need a batch setting around for a long time, not that it would go bad but my bean counter would get all bent out of shape. Oh I forgot the bean counter was me.

stick to your plan barry. you can sell a lot of black ,red ,orange and white but anything beyond that will have you back where you were.

i can tell you this. if you get hugger orange ,gm or chrysler it will be ford poppy red. even the Venusian red for early vettes .your orange is pretty close. cab on front.jpg

??
Voc ratings are not by size so if illegal in gallon, it would be illegal in quart?

Or am I missing something, thought I knew the law pretty well?

I think black white and red...maybe orange. Those are really the "popular colors". Even a nice fine bright metallic silver.

With HOK cheaper than most other top end lines now...leave the other colors to them and the big guys. Almost like either offer all of it, or just a select few and be done.

I must say though, excited about the flat clear. Flat or MAT? Will it be like sikkens mat clear for example, you can mix with ac3 to get different gloss levels.

A good black, a bright clean white, and a silver similar to HOK -----@--------- (or nicer) are basics. The white and silver can be bases to other bases. Tinted SPI intercoat makes a fantastic candy.
Some including me like a clean white under red, yellow, orange etc., even if it's a solid color.
Once you go beyond a few basics and into colors where do you end and it will never please all. However I never did get to use the legendary SPI red :D.

i have 2 gal of red and a gallon of orange. so i'm covered on a few. hoping the black/silver cove vette shows up. i have a gallon of silver also but it has a home :)

2 colors that are cool are 77 Corvette yellow
And 66 Plymouth Belvedere GTX Silver (metallic)

Im with Shine on this Barry. Stick to the basic colors like black, white and red.. If I remember correctly.,. It was only black in the begining, then years later the colors came along.. In my opinion there are soo many colors that someone may like on a classic car, you just cant compete and make profits on those.. Basic Black, white and red.. You can selll that all day at an affordable price with consistency.. Too many colors.. too many headaches!!!!!
