1969 Camaro SS

i'm not a camaro expert but i know it would be much easier to match the body to the lid. i believe i would set a jack in the trunk and see if i could push up the rear filler panel.

The rear panel below the window on the '70 GTO I'm doing was way off. I had to set it on blocks and pretty much do pushups on it. Even then after it was screwed on, I climbed up on it and gave it some good downward pressure with my boot.

The glass will help tell you how far off it is, even though it is tempered and will flex, there's a limit to that. Mock it up on setting blocks to make sure it will fit right.

The bow in the decklid is about 3/4 way down nearing the back of the quarters/taillight panel.. Up front at the filler panel the fit of the quarters, filler panel and decklid are fine.. If it was up front at the filler panel, the fix would be easy in my opinion..

Im no camero expert either shine.. Im just dumb enough to work on these things

I know it's hard to believe, but it could be the quarters are not right. I have no problem with bending the qtrs to match the deck lid and calling it a day. I do that all the time, and have an old screw jack (Kept the jack and threw the Toyota away. LOL) that I use just for that purpose. Simply put the jack in the trunk and push up on the qtr where needed to make it match the deck lid.

Sure hard to tell from here, but usually when we see a factory part with no signs of trauma, and an aftermarket part does not match it, 99.9% of the time the blame goes to the new part.

Deck lids can get bowed like that, though, if the vehicle was hit hard enough in the rear for the striker to pull the latch forward. This kind of damage can be hard to detect, but there might be some distortion around the latch area if it has happened.

i just would not fool with the lid. you bend it and it will warp all to be damned . i would work on the qrt .

BK, if it makes you feel any better...the all original 68 i have in the shop, decklid doesn't fit worth a flip either.

On a plymouth cuda we did once, we ran into this. They are kind of similar in the rear as a camaro. Aftermarket full quarters and decklid..along with deck filler panel. Pretty much did what aaron described with a scissor jack. Jack both quarters up and did some tweaking on the decklid edges and fits good now.

I usually try to work the quarters myself, but we have had our share of fun with those decklids. I have a original in my basment that I have used for testing in the past.

This is what I love about this forum and the internet.. Just a wealth of knowledge that I would not otherwise be privy to.. Almost makes me look like I know what Im doing half the time..

Thank you all for your continued help.. Im jacking this bad boy up!!!!

I just keep hopeing that you'll get that one done in time to come and paint the one that I have here. LOL

These cars fit like crap when they were new, trying to get that perfect flowing lexus like fit takes a lot of time. You're limited on how much reshaping you can do to the decklid, like Shine cautioned if you bend it too much it will buckle and warp. If you break the spotwelds loose along the front edge and sides the skin can slide independant of the inner structure and you can move it more but even then it's touchy. You can jack up the quarters and filler panel and sometimes it makes all the difference, run a porto power with the hose through the tailamp opening so you can pump it with the decklid closed and see how the contour changes. The contour of the quarters adjacent to the decklid is also wrong if you're looking for a nice flowing transition from the decklid to the quarters.

Update

Well my ole buddy Jim came over today and helped me get the doors hung along with the fenders and hood for the final mock up before I tear it down again to weld it up..

Just a couple hours and we were done.. The gaps will need a little massaging on the drivers side, but almost fit perfect on the dang passengers side.. LOL Go figure,, damn chevy ;)
