mixing paint brands

I often hear "stick with one brand". Is this really required and if so how are people using SPI clear when there is no SPI base? If I use lets say PPG epoxy, Summit base (who know who it really is) and SPI clear will there be any problem? Granted I will use reducers and hardeners from the same brand paint product I am using.

Once the paint flashes or dries it does not know what you are putting over it.

Best example I can give is, if the BS the paint companies say, you must use the system, then when you repair your new ford, you must use the exact same paint that came on the car from ford, if Dupont, then PPG will not work.

Thanks for the reply and that makes sense.
Now and I imagine you are tired of this question but what can I expect out of a job on a nice driver using a base such as Summit's or Kirker's Black Diamond?

First thing is go with deltron or prospray or another good base and hopefully you will be looking at a 10-15 year job but you see new cars that look awful in two years and new cars that look great 10 years later, it is all how it is driven and maintained.
Use good products. Its a tough question to answer.

My t-bird with 25,000 miles since done around 2000 still looks good and the black Chevy done in 1999, still looks good, one is Dupont base and one is PPG.

Dont use Kirker.. I will be the one to say it.. Dont use kirker.. It will fade faster than any decent base.. The clear will still look beautiful over top it,, but the color underneath will begin to fade and change after a couple of years.. I have seen this first hand on cars people have done with kirker products and topcoated with quality clears thinking they got away with something..

Did I say dont use kirker.. Just wanted to make sure I said. Dont use kirker.. Dont use kirker

I can't remember the last time i used one brand all the way through..

Other than when spi had base.

jcclark,
Have you tried their new basecoat system called Black Diamond?

Black base is the cheapest color to buy, I don't understand.
Is this car of any value, what are we painting?

An aerosol can will look good under a good clear, not my issue, lasting is.

While we are on the subject.
How much is a gallon of Black base:
Lesional
Prospray
Deltron
Diamont
Auto base plus
Spies

Anyone know?

It is true I have never used Kirker, however that doesnt mean squat.. Yes I think you have a pretty car Jim.. I tell you that often.. Yet I do remember not too long ago you mentioning that the hood had faded.. That is from the poor color fastness of the paint, meaning the lack of good amount of UV inhibitors in the color not the clear.. Has nothing to do with the clear, your bodywork or the final buff job..

EIDT: THE HOOD HAS NOT FADED ON THIS CAR, IT SIMPLY WAS THE BUMPER HAD FADED AS MOST OEM CARS DO THE SAME THING.. MY APOLOGIES TO JIM!!

You can draw a killer mural with sharpie markers.. Clear it with whatever clear and let it set in the sun and it will fade out..
Same thing with Candy paint.. Has everything to do with uv inhibitors when a quality clear like Universal is used over it..

What you also fail to mention to these people is this.. You couldnt spray the single stage as a single stage paint,, It was soooooo runny, you had to dry spray on the single stage like a base coat in order to create uniformity in the metallic and to keep that fork lift paint from running onto the floor.. You are a very good experienced painter who was able to make do with the situation..

Suggesting that a new painter or hobbyist is going to be able to replicate your procedure is not realistic.. Not to mention that each batch is noticeably different in shade, again not out of my mouth, but those of you who use the paint..

If you take those few things I have mentioned that are never mentioned when someone talks how good Kirker is... In my humble opinion its easy to understand why we don't recommend that paint to people.. I personally think it to be irresponsible on our part here..

We are hear to help people, not have them waste their money on paint they will have to persuade onto a car, and use tricks they probably wont know about to make it look worth anything..

Look at it like this..

1. Must dry spray a single stage paint that is technically supposed to be applied wet
2. Must purchase all the extra paint you may think you will need in order to keep it in the same family shade.
3. Must be able to make the dry sprayed paint have uniformity without stripes..

If your willing to tell everyone that you recommend that paint to all the downsides you have experienced but are willing to accept because its dirt cheap, thats one thing.. But to say its great and leave it at that is completely misleading..

I know you personally Jim and I know you are not at all trying to mislead anyone, so please dont take my reply as such..
Im simply stating things that someone looking at kirker paint should be aware of 1st ole buddy

Black Diamond is Kirker's base coat system. The color I am looking at is Viper Red. This paint will be used on a '68 Chevy truck. It seems that people either swear by Kirker or hate it. No middle ground.

What's up with the "never mind"?

Dang this paint stuff is weird.

If I offended anyone with my questions sorry. I admit I am not a paint expert. I have painted two cars so I am not totally green.

One of the reasons I am here is because my local PPG store could care less if I buy anything from them and there products are to me extremely expensive. So I read about SPI on other forums being a very good epoxy and clear. So I buy the epoxy and am looking down the road for paint and am trying to find a base to use with it. That's where the Summit and Kirker questions come from. Their marketing is similar to SPI as that it is a great product for hobbiest etc. If I got to use top shelf base that is available locally and also the big ticket item then why would I not buy everything from them?
