Two tone plans

I'm going back and forth trying to decide whether to pain my own car. I really want to do it, so that's the plan at this moment!

I'm using SPI epoxy, and the car will be two tone, red & black. Current thinking is I'll use SPI dark red and black base. So my big question is...what color epoxy as my sealer? My original thought was SPI black epoxy over the prepped bare steel, gray high-build, then epoxy as sealer after blocking. Reading through the forum, it sounds like white epoxy as sealer is the right choice for red. But with the second base color being black, can I get away with white epoxy for the whole job--or would I need to use a darker epoxy to seal before the black base?

Thanks!

Jay

Well, I know I will get flamed for this, but here goes. I hate using white colored sealer under red, black or any other highly contrasting color. I know that it supposedly makes the reds pop a little more...not my experience unless you haven't put enough paint on. I would use gray under both your colors...it looks better under the chips that any street driven car will get and give the best compromise for coverage...and I don't think you will SEE the difference in the red or its pop....SPI red rocks and has huge pop on its own, regardless of using white or gray sealer....course you mileage may vary....Dave

Grey would work great under both colors also another option would be the red oxide epoxy.

Remember, you are posting on the SPI forum.:D

No one here would flame one of our most experienced members. I sure do appreciate your help with fixing the fiberglass tail pan for my 34 Chevy. 2 years later, it still looks great.

Paint it yourself, Shoot for full coverage. The red epoxy rocks!

Bob, it was always my understanding that Barry came out with the RO epoxy for people like Rusty that work on old Fords. Is there some other benefit to it that you can school me on?

Makes sense to me! Thanks for the advice.

I really (really) want to do this myself. I read Barry's post about dark red and couldn't have been happier. I think it may be just what I need!
