Dub,
You and I can only look, I think that one you need to own a bank to own!

as a matter of fact .............. he does .....

next will be his 1954 corvette built the same way.

You wouldn't believe the amount of calls I have received over the last couple of years from vette guys who want to use SPI Epoxy Primer exclusively on their vette restoration. They read about it on a forum, saw the end result and that's way they are going to do their vette.

you wouldn't believe the amount of grief i have suffered for ever mentioning it. almost as bad as saying anything about soda blasting. i have stopped even visiting corvette sites and just about ever other paint site because of it. i'm to the point i don't even want to talk to anyone about epoxy only.

You have a lot of followers out there on this topic! I have the phone calls and the sales to prove it.

I understand your frustration (I've read the posts) but lots of us are listening. Just mixed up a batch of polyester resin and hardener so I could throw it out without creating a bio-hazard. I'm going to have to buy some more hardener to convert the gallon of poly primer into some junkyard art.

Shine, I'm just glad you were still preaching when I was looking for answers. You can't convert all the heathens but you've done a great job just by trying.

i'm out of the advice business . even the moderators on the vette sites have an attitude problem. i get the same response on the tri5 sites. if you disagree with somebody on stupid advice your toast . this is the only paint site i will participate on. in all the time i have been here i have yet to have a cross word with anyone. i put up with it on streetrodding.com because i have been there since 03 but i have my limits.

You really should not let it bother you so much, we have a lot of high dollar shops doing the old vettes with just epoxy, started a number of years ago and how often do you hear of a vette shop that swears you should only use a gel-coat?

I had a call on the tech line from a Sherwin Williams rep--YES a company paint rep wanting to buy Universal for his Mustang show car. (his first attempt) I listened real close for a little bit and said, why would you care about using a quality clear when you have acid etched the bare metal and used a base and primer never seen in the show world before?

He said acid primer is great stuff and I said assuming it is, what you going to sell in January when its illegal?

I left it with use the S&W clear as the car deserves it.

Poor James heard the conversation and was having a heart attack, as he did not know who I was talking to. If you can't have some fun, why come to work?

hard not to barry . when you see some stupid advice and try to help by offering a different opinion then have to deal with some mouthy punk with barely enough experience to be a helper it gets old quick.
we gelcoated in the early 70's because lacquer would not hide anything and polyester sucked back then. but once we figured out we were closing the gaps and risking delamination and cracking we looked for a better way. featherfill was about the only alternative for a long time. i actually used some marine epoxy for a while but it was such a pia to use i stopped.
polyester works for many of the guys here but it has just bit me once too often.

I really hate to hear this, I was looking forward to a syndicated advice column, ie: Shine Says!

I like that! Guess I would have to give up Rush to listen.

Shine..... I followed your posts when doing that Vette and thought it seemed like "the right way" to do restorations. I completed this Mustang a couple of years ago, based on your way. It has nothing between the metal and base coat except epoxy primer. BTW.... that includes NO FILLER.

looks great to me. i just think it is a simpler way to do it . fewer products..fewer chances for problems.

I don't like the idea of going from one primer to another. Then I have to make sure that I have enough of different products. Also have to make sure that I use the right one for each step. Don't like to worry about hitting bare metal when I am ready to spray 2K. Epoxy over all surfaces and I am done. I am not a painter, so I have to keep it simple.

all i stock is epoxy:) i am using some turbo on my truck though. wanted to try it. as beat up as it is i may get dome evercoat high build 404.

Shine, I used to get all upset about the dopes out there handing out worse-than-useless advice. I even quit posting on hotrodders for a looong time because I could not stand to be associated with the crap advise that is put out there. But I have a new perspective on things now. I don't need to prove anything to anyone, nor waste time on defending my point of view. I don't have to feel insulted my someone who does not know me. If people want to take my advice, good for them. If not, good for them as well. There's really not a whole lot you can do to defend your honor over the Internet anyway, except to rise above it and be the bigger person.
