let's talk sanding

the company has been in japan since 1930's. i dont really care where it's made. i want results.

No doubt sir, if it came fro. China and moved along like that I prob wouldn't mind.

I am interested in the USC chad was talking about tho, is it a finishing film, trizact, buflex type product or just regular paper?

yes they have the orange paper, the synwave stuff and also the gold.. So far I have only tried the Gold..
none of my current suppliers carries Eagle and prefer to not have to add another supplier.. Plus I would probably be the only one to swing for the Eagle anyways.

The usc orange has 1500,2000,2500 in 6 in. I am suppose to have some samples of them coming but have not got them yet.

usc has made a big push in the abrasives market. surprised me some. should get mine next week hopefully .

i tried a box of the orange -----@--------- 1000 to replace eagle yellow discs. same stuff bob posted the link of. i can get the -----@--------- here local. unfortunately it sux. also they like to trick you with the price a bit. there are 40 discs in a box. the stuff cuts fine but it loads up instantly. your tearing off sheets more than your sanding. im just sticking with eagle. i have yet to find a dry finishing film in the 1000-1500 grit that is as good as the eagle. it just keeps going and going compared to anything else i have used. eagle sells on amazon so i guess ill just order from there. eagle also discontinued the bufflex green wet. i have 3 boxes left. they now have the same stuff but in a dry version which i just cant imagine working at a grit like that but who knows. i dont think there is anything keeping you from using it wet though.

good to know jim. i like the eagle also. will try the orange ones after i get them. have you used the norton ice ?

When this thread gets all the experience figured out, it should become a sticky. I'm always trying to find the best product for every task, whether it's sanding metal, primer, filler, clear, etc etc... would be nice to have a 1 click reference!

shine, i have not used the ice. those are the foam discs like the trizact right? i have been wanting to try them to compare. i havent paid attention to nortons color sanding products in quite awhile. i used their q260 finishing film as soon as it came out some years ago and it was great. about 6mos after the release they changed something in it. im not sure what it was but overnight it went from being great to being crap. its my guess they realized it lasted too long and werent selling enough of it or there was some legal action going on between them and 3m and norton lost. since then i havent tried any of their stuff. been using eagle ever since.

Norton has a line called black Ice, I have it in stock.. wet sand paper in sheets. I think that is what he is referring to..

As far as the orange goes.. I discussed it with a rep and was told I may be better off getting the gold paper.. Which is what I sampled and so far so good.
However I am use to Indasa..

With that being said I also have the red Norton in stock, and neither me or the guys in the shop can say we prefer one over the other.. So usually they just grab the Indasa. However all of the gold samples I had are used up.. I got some more today and will probably be ordering up some paper..

my goal is to get 1000,1500,2000,2500 all in 6 in. i'm old and stubborn and still believe in using each step. nothing ticks me off more than to be polishing and finding 1000 scratches.

yes, the norton foam pads are the ones i'm interested in . that and the dry ice disc .
seems no one makes 2500 in 6 in .

When I was looking for that eagle stuff, most went to amazon, these popped up.

Fintech, they were pretty nice, looked like the mcmcaster adhesive blue stuff, but of course, like I learned, wet and glue is no good. But they only go to 2000. They have quite a bit of velcro, makes it very soft.

That ebay china stuff looks like that blue gray, so it might be the same.

i will give the usc orange a try then the norton foam. talked to a fellow who has used the norton and is pleased with it.

when you try the dryice finishing film discs (q260) let me know what you think of it. its been probably 2 years since i ditched it so i am curious if they went back and made changes again to make it better. 2500 is sort of an oddball grit. most systems go from 1500 or 2000 to 3000. just an fyi, the green eagle bufflex discs are 2500 grit but i dont think it actually says that anywhere on the box.

going to buff your clear after sanding and still finding 1000 grit scratches in it does suck. i think that what ends up happening to alot of people and they think they have a dirt or pigtail problem. its actually that they havent sanded enough each step.

I have had to go back and re-sand a few times... Frustrating...

Out in you're neck of the woods again Jim.. Sorta..

I'm trying -----@--------- synwave 1500, They have a 3000 as well that I do have, haven't played with it much yet.

It's discouraging that I can't find a tech data sheet on the stuff, I've gathered by trial and error, that it is a dry film paper. It doesn't fall apart wet, it just won't cut. It will cut dry, but it loads instantly and pigtails. It would maybe be ok if it actually came with the interface ring that they say is included with the paper, but it doesn't.
