Factory Five '33 hot Rod Build

Arrowhead

Oldtimer
I had a thread on the old SPI site so I thought I'd repost it and up date it a little.

I picked my kit up at the factory on May 30, 2009.

Up until this point things were going pretty good. Long story short I took the car to get the state field inspection and they found problems with the numbers on the engine block. I had to remove the engine, find a replacement, put it in the car and take the car back down for another inspection. It went fine and I got all my paper work together and got my plates and put it on the road.

I lost a lot of custom parts to DMV on the original motor so I just ran with the stock intake for a while.

I did manage to reproduce most of the custom parts so I put the blower back on:

Same wheels I have for my truck..

If you ever need someone to store it for you I have just the place.. :)

Oh, it is looking good and I'm sure that state employee is really enjoying the engine you gave him.

Bummer.
The owner of the company I work for is building a factory five 33 also. He isn't as far along as you, he hasnt started to mount the body yet.
He is using a new Jack Roush 427, hopefully it will get through DMV. I don't remember the wheel style but the tire sizing he went with is the same as on his Ford GT.

Actually, anything they confiscate goes up for auction. My old engine should be up in a couple weeks so I might go and try to get it back.

Sometimes I've wondered why I was happy to leave New York 35 years ago. Almost forgot the DMV -- and the annual inspection which ALWAYS required a headlight adjustment for an extra $7.

That is absolutely rediculous!!!!

They took it from you because something was wrong with it, but then are willing to re-sell to someone else.. ughh..

Isn't that interesting, an item they consider to be stolen or questionable once in their possession becomes saleable

Im confused about the engine.. Exactly why did they take it?? Did they claim it was a stolen block, and how do they know this?? Please clear this up for me as I am steaming reading how the F'n DMV can just take something that belongs to you without any recourse??

Help me to understand if you dont mind..

Car looks sweet by the way!!!

Arrowhead,

That is such a cool looking rod! I have always wanted to do a Factory 5 Shelby Cobra. Where the parts from Factory 5 high quality?

Your story about the DMV makes me burning mad! Did you try contacting your state representative? I was very lucky with my 34 Chevy, because I had a good title for it. I was probably supposed to go through that big DMV inspection like you did, but so far I have been lucky.

I have had a couple setbacks with my 34. After doing all the metal work, blasting and priming the car, I was going to have a so called reputable shop finish the body work and paint it for me. I caught them putting 2k on bare metal and they lied about it. Then they caught the back of my car ON FIRE! I painted the frame before I took it down there. I came in one day to check on my car and there was all this burnt residue all over the frame...on what used to be shiny black paint. They had the nerve to tell me that they didn't know what happened. I had to take the car home, undo just about everything they did, and do it myself.

I also got back fenders from Superior Glass Works in Oregon. They where really low quality. The one measured 4" longer than the other. It would not even come close to fitting in my fender well. They told me that an experienced body man would be able to do it. Any takers? All of their mold lines where really rough and in the worst possible locations. They did eventually take the fenders back and they paid return shipping too.

I had to wait for a while, but I eventually got my rear fenders from Outlaw Performance in PA. They fit perfectly and needed almost zero body work.

Amen to that! Left NY a long time ago and have no plans to return to that police state.

Overall I think it is a very good car. There are few things that could improved upon, but the engineering behind the chassis is killer. The Cobra's are pretty well refined by this point I think, there are on thier fourth update.
