Comparing Paint Prices and Quality.

They have solvent, water, and single stage urethane. The SS is a polyurethane. Solid colors only in SS.

As far as knowing if it is a "good" base or not, like I've said before, Akzo isn't going to put junk out there in the market. By junk I mean converted enamels, etc...

Up until I switched to Pro-Spray, I was using all Akzo products and they really don't have a product in any of their lines that is junk. If anything they are phasing out some awesome products for whatever reason. Things like the CR Washprimer (I'm sure due to the EPA) and reforming the utech system and getting rid of polybase (suppose to replace it with something "better"). They just aren't known having an arsenal of bad products like you have with ppg/basf/dupont.

There is a reason they are keeping Wanda as a stand alone system. They can make a mid line system that competes with alot of the top line systems at an affordable price because you don't get all of the junk built in with it like you would with Lesonal or Sikkens. It is all about choice, some shops don't want all the bloatware like you get in Windows PC's you buy at Best Buy ;). Utech is a great system, but the color match was lacking for a budget line system. Lesonal eventually moved out of that range as paint prices increase, unless you are spending 30k a month. If they moved this into their system with full product support, not only is the price going to go up, but honestly it would kill Lesonal sales as far as basecoat. Either that, or they dumb it down to something like omni or nason, and they just aren't going to do that. I believe they would get rid of the line before they do that.

Believe it or not, they do have SOME tech support. You just need to go through your jobber. The jobber DOES have someone to call on some things. If you have a mixing system, the software updates just about every month over the internet. Maybe a few times a year they will come by with a disc to do a hard update. They really have the color system down, it is just everything else beyond that where the system lags. The Low Voc clear, however, is a pretty good clear for production work.

Thank you Jeremy and Jim for the explanations. So, it sounds like Wanda is great stuff, how are there clears and primers? Are the single stage paints of good quality as well?

dan i have never used the ss. didnt even know they had it. my jobber here would sell utech if i called them for ss. i have got no info on the primer. as for the clears i have been told they are not great except for that low voc clear jeremy talked about. i have had a couple other guys say it was really nice stuff. none of that matters to me since i use spi for everything except for the base color. as for the base, everything jeremy said is exactly what my neighbor told me about it before i had the system put in. if it wasnt good akzo wouldnt sell it. your paying for paint plain and simple. none of the other bs.

The low voc clear and primer are the only other 2 good products. The SS is ok, but like Jim says go with Utech if you are wanting ss with Akzo.

The regular voc primer and clear is the old utech 320 clear and p80 primer. Decent stuff but only for an old junker or something.

Because I'm not recommending it doesn't mean it is going to fail if it is being used.....that is what I'm getting at.

For the type of work JimC and I do, the other products just aren't suitable.

Right now Single Stage only makes up about 7% of Wanda sales. As Jeremy stated it only comes in straight colors, no metallic or such. I don't even carry the SS. Other jobbers have other lines to carry the variety of SS, like ProSpray.

Awesome thread full of great replys thank you for all the great info. I'm going to call a few local jobbers that I forgot about to see what lines they sell and go from there.

I'm surprised to see that Matrix is selling for more than the Deltron....

Chad isn't selling the Prospray base coat anymore, so what is that new base coat he is now selling called? Any of you used it?

I have SPI, Moto-Base, and Wanda.. I have been going through a lot more Moto Base than Wanda.

Wanda has a stronger database on older cars. Which is Moto Bases weak point IMO, We have been creating formulas for the older colors. Which is what we had to do with Pro-Spray as well until they grew a database.

Has anyone tried the new version of pro spray since it was taken over by the big dogs?

Wow, for me, it sounds like Wanda might be a better choice on the stuff older than about 1980, since they have a good library for that stuff, unlike Moto-Base.

I got Pro Spray from Chad before Valspar took it over. Personally, I have not been convinced Valspar is going to keep up the quality of the former Pro Spray so next base coat I order will be Moto Base from Chad ( of they have the forumla). If not, Wanda.
