Can someone educate me (Valspar Base)

Thanks guys, I'm familiar with that thread. Here is a sprayout of PPG Pepper Grey (left) vs. Dupont Pepper Grey (right).

Grey – CMXM1287U / 610191 (stock#)

We have not seen this car in person, but the color does look close (there may be less green in it?).

I appreciate all the help with trying to match the color with ProSpray! If it comes down it that we have to use the DuPont - is that a bad thing? Don't worry, we'd never ask Rusty to spray the wall paint. I mean - Valspar :p

Lol at wall paint, but only issue with the dupont is pricing, i'm guessing it will be a bit more, the color pictured above just looks like a typical titanium, would be much easier if you were closer to look at color books.

With that price difference it would be interesting to see how it sprayed first before writing it off?

I have no idea on the valspar whatsoever, nor will pretend, BUT, I will say that their description doesn't mean much to me, only way to know for sure would be to try, but if shine has used it and compares to omni. I really don't have much desire to try.. I do personally hope it's at least a step above omni though. That I have used and can't say much good about it.

They cross referenced this color and came up with 44490, which is a peterbuilt color named peppper gray, I had already found that on my own by doing a name search, did not think it would be the same color, so i emailed her back asking if it is a color match. I guess england got emailed as well and sent back the same results.

LOL unfortunately, I was afraid of that. Thanks for looking into it Chad!

I think we would have better luck matching it to a OEM color. lol

I would like to disagree here, if I may.

First the starmist blue for my 57 t-bird came back as commercial color in Dupont as three different like colors.
In PPG it came back with 4 different commercial colors as like colors.
I bought a pint of all seven and matched closest one and there were only 300 T-birds painted that color in 57 the only year that color was used and if at a show they are all a half a shade off from each other.

Now from my Utech days, if I can, fleet colors are very stable and matched very carefully, especially a silver like in question, with imron being the standard everyone matches too, as that is what most fleets come painted with and you must remember
If fixing a door with a SS in 5000 0r 6000 base (same formula) it better just about be a panel paint match, as blending is not like on a car but much more complicated.

For a exact match you are probably correct, i'm saying in reference to if he wants something similar, but that being said it's probably best to go with the dupont formula that way it is exactly as desired, hate to finish a car and have it not be right.

It was worth a try though.

I seem to get good match to the turquise and white on the tri 5's with my line and get a lot of people calling in for that color saying the other brands don't have a good match, interesting to see all the variations from one line to the next.

very informative post. look how different the mustang looks in different environments and lighting as well as each cameras own characteristics. comparing colors online unless under same light side by side is tough.

Exactly what I was thinking when I viewed the photos, although there's no doubt that the colors are all different it would be very difficult to compare them accurately in different lighting. One looks to be outside in overcast, one in bright sunlight, one indoors. That color in the showroom pic can definitely, positively, be duplicated in most color lines but you need to have a sample to match it to and it's going to have to be a decent sized sample with some curves and in the same lighting when you're formulating the color. I know two painters that do quality work that love the Valspar 999. I've used DeBeers when it was available locally and I think it compares right up there with PPG Global, coverage was great, match was good, and these jobs have held up really well. I wish it was still available in this area.

That pepper grey can be matched, spend some time in the chip books, don't forget to also look at the wheel colors, find out what DuPont's formula is so you can see what basic tints/colors go into the formula for comparisons on any formulas for greys that look similar. Also look at the binder ratio. The name of the color can't be cross referenced just like Midnight blue, or dove grey.

It sure makes future repair work a lot easier if an acceptable OEM formula can be found, preferably from a more modern vehicle.

After doing some more research on the color, we found that it was in fact (or so we think!) a Peterbilt/Freightliner fleet color as Chad discovered. DOH! I am having Chad send me a sample and Lauren can spray both colors. Thank you Chad. Hopefully it is a match with the Dupont.

I know we would be better off going with a color from a modern vehicle, but it just has to be Pepper Grey! I appreciate all of your help and input, that is what makes this site so great.

The color sure looks close here:
