2K primer Regular build update.

I have made a tough decision, our formulas for the regular build primer has been our flag ship for 15 years and hands down, I have never tested a primer as good, my idea of good is not how it sprays but how it holds up down the road as our business is high end cars not used car work.
Six months of testing and playing I have settled on a new formula the 6520 is the first one and that batch is Jan/16 on bottom of can, the buff and black will also be changed when we make more.

I totally changed the resin to a newer much more expensive one; added more different types of Nano’s (3). AKA slang, microspheres.
One of the things I did not like with the old was if the inside of the can cooled it would thicken pretty fast, the new resin of course can but not as bad and this was due to one of the corrosion inhibitor’s as well as the old resin causing this, just 10 degrees could make the other where it depending on gun need a splash of reducer to spray. With the new resin and changing the ratios of the different corrosion inhibitors, I have reduced this issue to a point. Bottom line if inside of can is 55 degrees it will be a little thicker than normal.

Viscosity! To keep the OH/NCO ratios so the 6501 activators we have out there will work just fine, best guess would be 10,000 on any given day, as we sell about 1800 a month more than is needed on an average, with the new resin its about 2-3% more thicker then I wanted but that is the safest way to go.

Bottom line: Mixed 4:1 it sprays well out of some 1.7’s but not all, sprays good out of all the 1.8’s I have, so there is a sticker on the top of the can that says depending on gun okay to reduce as needed. The one 1.7 that did not spray well I added 2% urethane reducer to the activated mix and it sprayed nice and slick.

I’m excited about this new formula as once again it goes with the SPI attitude to make the very best, not just to stay the same or just get by.
This formula has increased my cost just over $4.00 a gallon but I’m so in love with this formula I’m eating that cost, so price is the same.

Sounds great Barry! I'll be looking forward to ordering another gallon to try on the next project!

How will the new primer compare to the turbo primer? I'm guessing the turbo will still be faster, but will they now be of equal quality?

Will dry a little slower than the Turbo and of course the turbo is recommended 4:1:1 for a normal build.

I also took the gel time from 71 minutes to a 128 minutes, to solve the problem of spraying large jobs in the high heat.

Great news, can't wait to try it out.

Will you still have to develop a slow 2K activator with this new formula?

Already did on paper but not so sure we will need it, If we do I can do 1200 cans start to finish in 4 hours, so holding off, as no real way I can test in meantime.
Could send some to our jobber in S. America but cost me more to ship a quart than a full pallet.

I'm interested in trying the new formulation, I'm sure the old formula was great from a quality standpoint, but it just never suited my spraying style. I have an LPH440 1.6 that works well with most primers that get put through it.

I was going to try the turbo primer on my next order. Now Im confused, turbo or the new formula for 2K Regular Build?

very interesting. im gonna have to try some. its been years since i have used it. i always used the high build instead because i always thought it sprayed better. the regular always seemed to spray dry and gritty no matter how heavy you sprayed it on. hb is always smooth and slick. funny because you would think that would be the opposite.

I'll be anxious to try this new batch as well, Sounds like it will correct a few of the qualms I had with the 2k.. I personally have always liked the 2k over the Turbo so that has been what I used, but it did gel up on me wIith one project over the summer, and I have also noticed that some times it needs a little reducer adjustment...

Turbo would be my choice of course for high end work, as more control with reducer and a little faster full cure time, not a lot but a little.

It the same product just 10% thicker but what you said is true, did spray a little slicker.

Im going to try the turbo next go around. My first try was the high build and I really had good luck with it. Went on nice and was really smooth.

I use way more epoxy than 2K but I do keep regular 2K in stock for when I need it. I used the regular 2K with reducer and could shoot it smooth with a 1.7. If that was wrong then it's a testament to the quality of the product because I never had a problem or any shrink backs. Plenty of flash time, maybe a coat or so more than un-reduced and usually an overnight cure.
I was planning to order the Turbo next time as it's designed to take reducer and I see plenty of good writing about it

Barry, what would be the 2k primer of choice for high end work? The regular build, turbo, or Hi-build? I've got a 240Z that I'm getting ready to get started on and it seems that everyone has their favorites. I'd like to know what you would consider the best choice. Also what is the general opinion about using a 2k urethane versus Poly Primer? I've always felt that it was preferable to use urethane over poly, am I wrong?

I asked Barry that question awhile ago and he said to use Turbo over the other 2K primers.

I am the weird one ... I always spray the 2K mixed at 4:1:1 ( with slow reducer ) ... I only have a 1.4 and like Jim C says it is hard to spray smooth but always sands nice!

Sprayed a new gallon yesterday with a 1.8 3m accuspray gun, probably an ounce of 885 thinner in a mixed quart...smoothest primer I've shot in a while.
