1970 Chevelle Black Single Stage

Customer bought this car out of Oklahoma because it was cheap and included a lot of new repop sheet metal. I found some paperwork showing it was from Ohio. Build turned into a perfect storm of ill fitting repop parts. Quarters, trunk floor, trunk dropoffs, deck lid, rear deck filler, outer wheel tubs, door shell, fenders, inner fenders, hood, front and rear valances, bumpers, bumper brackets. Toss in minitubs, smoothed firewall, shaved drip rails, raised tunnel for lowered ride height, and tucked and shaved bumpers for some added fun along with a Roadster Shop Spec chassis. I started in November, expect to send the painted roller home in late February.

Chassis was blown apart and received three coats of SPI epoxy.

Once all the sheet metal work was done it received three coats of SPi epoxy followed by filler, SPI epoxy and two coats of Clausen Sandy poly primer aka the Devil’s primer. :) Blocked then Turbo followed by final blocking and reduced epoxy sealer. This was my first chance to use @Dean Jenkins Black Diamond blocks. Loved them, they are my go to blocks now.

Once the sealer was done it was time for the black single stage. I sprayed five coats in one session with my Iwata LPH400 LV 1.4. Urethane retarder in the last coat. Little more peel than I usually get but no significant wave as near as I can tell so far. I forgot how much work it is to cut and buff this black single stage. It takes a lot more effort than Universal. It didn’t help that I pushed it out into the sun for a day. I cut it with 1000 yellow, 1500 Tolex, 2500 Buflex, 8000 Trizact on a DA. No hard blocking clear for Donny… :D…. I used the interface pads recommended by Jim C. They are firmer than the 3M pads, I like them. Pics below are as sprayed and after compounding with ACA 510 on their yellow wool pad. I did a quick second pass of compound with their spider cut purple foam pad. It’s grippy and pretty aggressive. May give it a third pass before polishing with 520.

Wow I am honored. Let’s wait until it’s at least a complete painted roller to see how it looks. I’m sure Kevin would agree but not sure when the car will be finished. He’s slowing down like me… :)

Customer dropped off a set of these printed mirror arms and some Mustang mirrors. Normally not a big deal but they don’t use the factory mirror mount holes. So out comes the welder to fill the five factory holes followed by a little bodywork and a repaint of the left door. :) Not great news but not a total disaster either. First time I have seen custom mirrors that don’t use the factory holes. Will know better next time. :)
