1967 Vette

i hired a fresh painter once. knew all done all . first damn thing he did was adjust his gun on my newly painted booth wall . i went friggin postal on him. took his gun away dumped the paint and threw it in the dumpster . guy must have thought i was nuts. i repaint my booth pretty regular. especially after black or red .

lol. That's not too bad....restorer friend of mine fired a guy for not taping up a rotisserie well. got a little overspray on it from the color of the car. Ive seen him in the corner of his build room with a toothbrush cleaning the baseboard mouldings...i like being clean but c'mon. We finally had the booth overhauled about 6 months ago before i got back in the shop full time...before that it really just had poor airflow for a down draft, which didn't help painting these big cars...couple grand later it works like a new one. Been there for 11 years now.

dont know if you know this but thought i'd pass it along. the screw holes in the doors only work once . i make a putty out of resin and cut up mat to refill them .

good point! Funny, everything that was screwed into the doors or door jamb, had a TON of dum-dum on the backside. The screws werent even screwed into the glass. Espeicially the rubber strip that goes on top of the door jamb at the roof. Screws were just screwed into the dum-dumb. A lot of things like that were either held on by dum-dum or some sort of weak 2 part epoxy. High dollar restoration this thing is!!!

i've tried everything. the only thing that works is to either put inserts in it or fill the hole with resin and fiber. putting screws into thin fiberglass has to be the all time dumbest thing gm did .

decided to go one round with poly primer. Will go over top the poly with a few coats of black epoxy for the final block. So still no urethane on this. Still quite amazed at what i was able to block out with 2 heavy coats of the epoxy.

i am going to try the 4:1 evercoat high build i think. not a fan of poly but had a friend use it and he liked it. BUT the car has not seen the sun yet . time will tell.

poly primer has never let me down so far. i want to try the 4-1 also. I used what sikkens poly i had left here on this. Might try the 4-1 on my dart.

Using spi epoxy, might not ever have to use urethane again lol. Only real complaint here is that blocking with 180, the epoxy loads the paper up much like blocking urethane primer with 320 does. At lower grits (80-120) seems to do better.

i wet sand everything. i hate dust !!!!!!! maybe it is just me but i have had poly shrink on me. i absolutely hate urethane primers. ok for a single coat on collision but thats it.

The last vette I did was a 54' that I put only epoxy on it. I only epoxy everything I do unless it's a collision job. I always crank the booth to 90 degrees, spray one coat epoxy in the morning, one at lunch, and one at night before I go in. Let it sit a week and was always impressed with the fill ability of the epoxy. I've been resisting the urge to try the poly fill also. I do spray 2coats epoxy to seal the body, then skim coat with filler/glaze putty down to 180 grit and then start my filling with epoxy. Usually the three coats of epoxy over the skim session handles most of the fill I need.
Your gaps look great on the doors. Once everything is straight I block down with 120 and then chase it 180 and I have less plugging since I'm removing the 120 scratches and not removing the orange peel.
Funny Shine, I'd rather eat dust than wet sand. I hate the sludge mess. I was always taught blocking wet so my hands were always looked like old raisins. Grandfather in law that taught me usually rips on me when he comes into the shop because I do certain things different than he taught me.
Looks like it will be a nice car when it's done.

i have a small 1/4 water line in the booth that will reach outside. got a bug sprayer on it. when i'm done sanding it is rinsed and clean. i rinse constantly while sanding. i wear a jersey glove over the latex glove. rag in a hand dont ya know.

The tape line to sand to is the way to block a straight line on them ol buggers...all should take note....great job
