which base would you use

B

BUSHMASTER

ok, my last post didnt go so well, so ill try it this way

if you were on a budget and was painting your own project which base would you use?

ive done a few "restorations" and my buddy is a painter and Sikkens rep so we used sikkens, he has left me hanging on my current project and i need to finish it up, its been a long project and i just want it done.

i know im definatly using SPI clear

thanks,
sent all 3 an email to find a local distributer

is $180 a good price for a gallon of PPG DBC?

Sounds cheap. I've not purchased DBC for nearly a decade, but nowadays a gallon of high quality base should be closer to $400. Maybe DBC is closer to a second line base these days.

Use hardener in DBC, it is a user friendly fast drying base, but is very brittle. I have seen terrible chipping on front ends and bumpers done by a PPG shop where I used to work, I know they cheaped out and didn't use activator.

I am sold on the Euro style basecoats at this point, there is little incentive for me to use anything other than Standox.

UM, $180 is super cheap for DBC. What color?

I've only used DBC a few times and had some coverage issues. Alot of shops use it though.

Unless it fell off the back of a truck I doubt its DBC. Maybe Omni. The last gallon of DBC i bought was package black and cost over $400.00. That was at least 5 years ago. What color is it?

Good point RodMan. I've seen paint stores to stick another logo on the can when its really the cheaper line to make you think you are getting the "good stuff". Happens more than you think.

A gallon of white toner in Wanda runs me $165 at my cost. I don't even think the cost for a jobber would be $180 for a gallon of dbc the more I think about it.

color is ppg pepper grey met ,

ebay type ppg deltron, guy will mix as long us you have the code

I don't know how it could possibly be sold that cheap. Seems fishy, but if you trust it, go ahead.

Ugh I guess I am a worry wart, but I'd be thinking about the quality of the paint, meaning how long will it last, how well will it shoot, how well will it cover, etc, etc.

Raymond, don't do it!!!!! I have had many problem calls over the years where people think they are getting one brand and its is another and NOTHING but a pack of problems and at that point I get the call, I give my typical bad news and it cost you nothing but more money too fix the problem.

It is just not worth it.

I think maybe it is so cheap because it is "ebay type ppg deltron"

That is exactly what, I have ran into with problem calls.
One was Delton and he had problems that you CAN'T have with a urethane and when said and done, he knew a painter and I asked him to have the guy smell the can and sure enough it was an enamel base type SS, so then we knew why we had the problems.
Had a similar deal (really about 20-40??) where guy would shoot base and it would do stupid things, sure enough it had the trace smell of enamel, maybe PPG changed their base? LOL

You would think the majors would be shopping this stuff to know how their label is getting on things that are not theirs, since it is totally illegal to do.
On Ebay--everything is PPG. (so they say)

Oh don't worry I'm not :) I was just replying to BUSHMASTER with the concerns I have.

Sounds like a good way to throw away $180 bucks. IMO........

Chad S is a prospray dealer here...I would check with him

it would be a hell of a mess if it was some junk and reacted badly with the primer or clear and a huge waste of time and money,
thanks guys
