What respirator recommended?

Other than a fresh air respirator, what paint respirator do you guys use/recommend?
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
Go to any "automotive paint store" and they will have three brands of double cartage respirators, SAS, 3M and Gerson, any one of them will work.

Cost will be $12-20, buy the one on sale.

i use a bullard hood . they are cheap reusable hoods. i do not use a fresh air setup because i don't paint that much any more. i do more fabrication and building . if your going to use it a lot you will need another air source or a good filter system .

Shine can you use a standard dual cartridge resperator with this hood? I have to wear glasses when painting and find it a real PITA to keep overspry off my specs.

no respirator . it is a hood with air flowing to it. works good for guys with glasses. you do not even smell the paint.

Shine found bullards web site hoods are very affordable, I suppose im going to have to break down and buy a fresh air system. Thanks

there are good filters you can buy for your compressed air. if using a lot then yes a fresh air system is good. my air is well filtered and i use it only a few times a year. when you get use to the hood you will love it. during summer i have a coil that runs through a 55 gal barrel full of water. makes for a great a/c unit for my blasting suit .

Earlier this year I bought a Turbine Products Breathe Cool Unit with a half mask. It sells for around $360 (with shipping) but that's with a 25-foot hose. I paid about $20 more for a 50-foot air hose.

Only thing extra was some 3/4" copper pipe, 1" vinyl tubing and some fittings to make a thru-wall connection to the outside of my garage and a hose to connect the blower outside.
The air hose connects to the blower with garden hose fittings so I put male fittings on both ends of my pass-thru. The dog-leg on the outside is just so the pipe won't turn when I connect the hoses.

To spray in the garage I set up the blower outside (area is always in the shade with an ocean breeze most days).

Inside it's just a simple connection.

The connections can be reversed in the event I want to sandblast in the side yard and then the air conditioned air from inside the garage gets supplied outside.

The whole setup fits in the narrow spaces on either side of the compressor when not in use. The hose and blower fit on the left side...

...and the mask, belt and short whip hang on the right.

I was hesitant to buy this setup but after a few years wearing this when I sleep, it seemed like a good idea. Now if I can only stay awake when I'm spraying paint...

Bob, saw that setup surfing, price point scared me but at $350.00 approx give or take a few dollars. If you use it then I think it is worth a second look. While working at Erickson Aircrane and painting Main Rotorblades we would use a fresh air system and really liked it, just thought true systems were to much for what i do. I really only breakout all painting supplys a handfull of times a year and would like to do it more.:encouragement:

Sure looks like a ResMed Mirage Activa :) I use the Mirage Activa LT.

Never have tried a chin strap, but once in a while I do wake up in the mornings and can tell I had been mouth breathing. Think I will pick one up when I go get a new head gear Monday @ Discount Cpap supplies

Regarding the Breathe Cool fresh air system, do you get a lot of "wind" noise with it, or is it relatively quiet? thx.

You can simplify the thru wall connections with garden hose qd's. quick couplers

SOF,
You nailed it. I am amazed at the difference it makes. I sleep like a rock (ticks my wife off no end) and feel rested in the morning. No longer need blood pressure medicine so that's an unexpected plus.

The Breathe-Cool machine is reasonably quiet at low speed but it gets pretty loud at full blast. It doesn't need to be anywhere near full blast to be effective but they use this one box to supply multiple masks so I guess it's a little over-kill. Important thing is I can't hear it when it's outside and hooked up through the wall.

I hate leaking garden hoses and I can't always tighten the fittings easily one-handed so I have brass quick couplers on all seven of them. I may use them on this system as well. One of my pictures shows the quick coupler on the end of the short whip that goes from the belt to the mask. I'm thinking of zip-tying my 50-foot 1/2" Flexzilla hose to this one so there's only one snake on the garage floor when I'm painting.

I've had the same breath cool machine for probably 6 years or so. Only problem I've ever had is when my 10hp compressor kicks on it shuts off the motor unless it's on full blast. The power surge stops the variable speed end of it. Not a big deal if I switch the compressor to the free air mode and the motor stays on all the time.

I've never sprayed with mine, I just use it for sanding and sandblasting. I run mine from 3/8 to 1/2 throttle. The force feed oxygen is nice when you have a lot of sanding to do. Seems to keep me energized even on big cars.

To spray I just use the 3m disposables and keep them fresh. I'm not doing it daily and the booth does a nice job of moving air.

LoL never thought of using our medical implements for painting, the wife works for G.S. wonder what kind handy things they have floating around the office??
