Wanda

I hate to resurrect a year old thread but....After shooting nearly every brand for the last 30 years. I was spraying when they started base/clear. In the mid '80's when Sherwin was telling everyone about their "new" base/clear system that was nothing but lacquer and peeled like sheets in less than a year. Anyway, I've sprayed them all. They all have an issue or two. Some are a personal preference. Like I don't like how thick standox is, I don't like Sherwin's match (or lack of), I don't like Chroma anything coverage and de-nibing. Anyway my rant is over. Through all the years I was mostly a Diamont or Glasurit sprayer. My friend opened a Sikkens store so I changed, did not like it, went back to Diamont. I have sprayed Wanda about two dozen times and I'm putting in a machine. Is it the best thing I have ever sprayed, I don't think so?!? But it is no worst than any of the others (majors) I have sprayed and a lot less expensive. It sprays and looks a lot like Diamont so I would guess that catalyzing the basecoat is a must to keep rock chips from growing. That is why diamont came out with BCH2 basecoat catalyst to start with.

Hi Guys,
I have read all 7 pages of this thread. I would like to try Wanda. How do I find any on the west coast? I don't even know how to find it anywhere:) So where do I start. I plan to use all SPI products on my 1989 Dodge dually project. I am at bare metal now and ready to start ordering product. I understand that SPI does not have a blue base coat. I also have decided to do a SS and not bc/cc.
I will try to choose the correct forum thread to post what I think I need in the way of Product ie, Primer, primer sealer, BC. I don't want to mess this project up now.
Thanks,
Doug

Thanks Mitch, I will try a PM..... How do I send a PM to him? :)
Doug

Mitch,
I hope that I sent the message correctly:)
Will I get a reply on this site or my regular e-mail?
Thanks again,
Doug

I sprayed 3 coats of Wanda base last night around 5 pm. The tech sheet say to clear with 24 hours max, however, my wife went into the ER last night and I will unable to shoot the clear in that time frame. Since it is my first time shooting this base can someone with experience tell me if I can go past the 24 hours to say 32 hours?

I was able to get home and get the clear sprayed in time.
We had a snow storm here and the hospital is 45 minutes from my house. Fortunately my wife was release early.

Thanks Jim,
I was not wanting to sand and re-shoot the base since this is the last of that special mix the PPG guy did for me.
Last week I went to the Leading Edge store (my only other option than Napa) and had them mix some Limco Supreme Plus to use on the Jeep project. The girl working there also worked at the two previous stores in that location and said she could match the custom mix no problem. If I like the Limco Supreme as well as the Wanda I may go there just so I don't have to give my money to the other guy.

Looking for someplace to buy Wanda. I am in Florida about an hour south of Sarasota. Anybody know who sells. Appreciate any help.

good lord, the limco supreme is nowhere in the realm of wanda. when i was using basf i would spray it now and again.....it works but its pretty bad. its an acrylic enamel. if you use it DO NOT activate it. it will 1/2 kick off just like a regular acrylic enamel then it will wrinkle if you put more on it or spray the clear too wet.

There is Limco Supreme and there is Supreme Plus. The PLUS is "supposed" to be a polyester type base. I used it once...base seemed kind of seedy but it seemed ok. Nothing I would choose over the Wanda...

I will say though, if they are trying to match a special mix and that color has xirallic pearls or anything, It might be tough as most of these cheaper bases do not have the assortment that the higher ends do. Some colors you can get away with. Last I used the PLUS, they weren't recommending doing any new car colors in it because they were still working on these...but that was a few years ago. That being said, Wanda does a damn nice job at these colors with the selection that they have.

They told me they only carry the Supreme Plus. I will shoot it on the Jeep project which is a solid color.
The 55 truck looks blue at times and green at others. Here's a couple of pics:
This is the step with 3 coats of the Wanda premixed base and 3 coats of SPI UV clear:

Here's the front of the truck with the newly painted latch panel and upper fill panel installed:

Looks close there but here is the step installed:

This side of the booth has a window so it receives natural light.
I took a picture of the other side of the truck which is under fluorescent light to see if it made any difference.

You can tell the other panels of the truck have lots of scratches and nicks in them so all will eventually be painted. I was wanting to see if I could get this color matched since the customer loves it. Another thing was the truck was painted in pieces and never assembled before I got it. It may well have looked bad anyway.

Could this be one of the color shifting paints? I have no experience with them.
