Viscosity issues with white epoxy just purchased

I sent a direct message a few days ago but never got a reply and now I'm out of the old can of white epoxy I had been using. About a week or so ago I got a fresh gallon of white epoxy as I was running low and when I opened the can I found nearly 3/4 of it was pretty thick sludge unlike in the past where only a couple inches on the bottom are. I spent a considerable amount of time making sure I had it mixed up with no clumps left but after doing so noticed this stuff is way thicker than what I am used to seeing and I've been spraying epoxy prob 12 years or better and go through a gallon or two a year.

I have never thinned my epoxy so I mixed this stuff like I normally do at 1:1 and it was still so thick that it would not spray. I thinned it prob 30% and it was still a struggle to spray . When I looked at the date on the can it was Dec 2021 so I looked at the old can of white and it was from 2020. I typically spray black but have also sprayed the gray however this last can of white is nowhere close to what I have been spraying. It almost seems to me that it got too much solids when it was mixed.

Has anyone else ran into this? Was there a batch issue? I really prefer to continue mixing and spraying the way I have for years because I know the results so at this point I'm kinda stuck in the water until I get a concrete reason or answer. I've tried 3 different guns with tips from 1.4 to 1.5 all of which I have had no issues spraying former batches of epoxy with for quite some time and infact after having this issue went back and used the last of the 2020 can and it sprayed just as it always had so I know I was not having equipment issues.

Your new can of epoxy was dated 2021? Did you get that directly from SPI or a jobber?

The closest jobber is a couple hour round trip for me so they deliver it to a friends shop and I pick it up there. It cam from Direct Access in Commerce, Ga as has all my other SPI epoxies in the past.

yes this sounds strange. i have always seen slight viscosity difference from batch to batch of all the primers and the sealer but what you are saying sounds extreme.

Agreed, this is pretty drastic compared to past batches and I've got 3 different colors here at the moment with 1 car in white and the other stripped and in black.

Not sure if this helps but the firsr 4 pics are the new gallon of white and the last is a quart of gray I got a few months ago. Definitely a very noticeable difference in the thickness.

having a website myself with one of those contact forms built in the site, i can tell you that 90% of the time those dont work. those things get hammered by bots and spam so you msg ends up goin unnoticed. i had one on my site and i was getting over 1500 responses a day on that thing. all garbage. i just had to shut it off. email directly or call

In the future order direct from SPI. You will get fresh stuff and get it delivered to your door.
All my future orders are going direct, just received this black epoxy dated 10-26-22 stirred for about 25 minutes and still didn't separate all the way. Do you think this will be ok with more stirring in the morning ? This pic is before stirring ! Sorry OP for the thread hijack.

When it's like that for me it takes 15-20 minutes nonstop of stirring it by hand to get it all mixed. It will mix just takes time.

Figured I'd say this, since I converted to SPI in 2016, the only time I have ever had an issue with an SPI product was when some Euro clear was in subfreezing weather during shipping. Not SPI's fault but Barry replaced it no questions asked. Everything else has been perfect and worked exactly as intended.

It is almost a year old, I've seen this over the years with age, and mixes in a matter of minutes or 2 minutes on a shaker, white has always been the worst for settling but it cant
Thicken on its own if sealed.
It will mix in as just normal settling.
I constantly opening older batches from a year old to 3 or 4 years old to test.
I'm available all weekend on the tech line.

Sane here long time user and only one time small issue with a activator and quick free replacement. Call is best.
