UV clear first timer experience.

Figured I'd share my experience using universal clear for the first time on my friends bike tank. Maybe it will help others using it for the first time. My friends wife wanted me to paint it with out him knowing to surprise him as he's been working on this bike all winter. Thats a good wife right there lol.

First off I spray Standox Premium and 15-60 plus clears everyday at work for a collision shop which I've been told are polyurethane. They are 1.5 coat application clears I spray with a 1.4 sata rp. I keep my gun about 3in away with a 75% overlap which lays out real nice then I either do the samething for a smooth finish or i pull the gun back and do a 50% overlap to add some orange peel to match the adjacent panels, yes I said it I have to add orange peel to some cars believe it or not lol. So I'm used to spraying these 2 clears, knowing SPI is a poly clear I was thinking it was going to be similar and boy was I wrong lol.

I expected it to be thick like Standox it seemed thinner than I thought so for the first coat I "tip toed" with it. I pulled the gun back about 6in and went slower. I was very very unhappy with how the first coat layed out. It seemed thin stirring it and straining it but it didn't spray like a thin clear.

My second coat I sprayed how I normally spray Standox. It looked better than the first but still wasnt what i expected so I decided to do a 3rd coat.

She was going to surprise him the next day with the tank so I didn't really have a lot of time. So I figured if it has orange peel I'm gonna have to wet sand and buff it. If i get runs I'm gonna have to wet sand and buff it so theres nothing to loose on the 3rd coat. I held my gun 3in away slowed down and hammered this stuff on. If I did this with standox i'd have clearsicles hanging off this thing. And it turned out Great! no runs no sags flowed out nice. So moral of this story for first timers is don't be afraid of this clear if its not working out how you expected there's always a solution. 100_0776.jpg

Looks great and don't feel alone as in the last 4-5 months we have had a number of Standox / Spies shops convert and we here the same story.
The main problem is they recommend a 1.2 tip for their clear and there is noway the PSI clear will come out of a 1.2. Had a number of them try butunlesss they reduce the clear, it will not.
