Using panel adhesive over epoxy

R

Ricker

Going to be fixing some rust over the wheel arch. Will this work or should I try butt welding it in with a mig welder (I'm not to good at welding).

1. cut out the bad spots
2. clean up the pinch weld
3. cut my patch panel to fit
4. Spray some epoxy primer inside the wheel well, pinch weld, back of the patch panel. and the flange.
5. apply some 3m automix panel adhesive to the flange and pinch weld
6. clamp the pinch weld together. Screw the flange and panel together with some stainless steel sheet metal screws.
7. grind the heads down after everything cures.
8. body fill

Any suggestions?

SPI Epoxy over panel adhesive

First the bonding material should be applied over bare metal, this statement goes back to the original testing back in the early 90's, now things may have changed since then and 3M may say its OK for the bonding material to be applied to epoxy that has sat over night, see what their tech sheet says.

Other thing is when done bonding you must apply a barrier coat of epoxy over the bond before applying filler, filler should never touch the bond.

Thanks Barry!! I got ahold of 3M and they said the panel adhesive should be applied directly to bare metal as you said. Thanks for the heads up about the barrier coat of epoxy, I'll do that also.

Is the 3M Automix Panel Adhesive good stuff or is there any better, all recommendations greatly appreciated.

It is good stuff, don't get me wrong, I use instead.

Perfer Dyuramix (bonding and repair)
Norton, next best.
Fuzor next best.

For seam sealers.
Sem
Duramix
Fuzor.

All are good, the above order is just my choices.
