Trying to pick out a dedicated clear gun.

You figure the 1.4 is a bit much in the WS400 Evo? Do you do complete sprays with your 1.3? SPI clear?

I'm tempted to just order a W400-LV but I have to be honest, the Sata 5000 rp and the WS400 evo are super tempting to me right now.

I have the italian ebay listing up on my laptop right now for 5000 rp 1.3. it's about 402.50 US, I imagine it's prob 40-50 bucks shipping too.

I haven't found a smokin deal on a WS400 yet.

I started using satas in school and sprayed the front bumper of my honda and it came out flawless. This was the first time I ever held a sata and I never looked back. I tried to spray clear through an 3000 hvlp and it came out so-so. when I bought my 4000 rp it made me a much better painter. I remember spraying a hood for a buddy and literally sleeping between coats and spraying rustoleum which never comes out like glass. the hood was the second thing I painted with the rp and it was perfect except for a huge bug. people look at the epoxy on my firebird and tell me I did a great job painting it. if straight epoxy comes out like glass you have the right gun. Sata rules

The W400 I run around 26-27 psi and it's definitely faster than the LPH400. For completes I like it much better, I can leap frog from one side of the vehicle to the other quicker and I never have a problem keeping a wet edge.

If I'm painting something small, or sometimes spraying jambs outside the spray booth then I use the LPH400 at around 20/22 psi and it lays the clear down very nice with less overspray than the W400.

But overall I think the W400 can give a slicker coat, the extra overspray is worth the better finish.

Do you thin your clear?

I have the Sata 5000 in a 1.4 & also 1.3, sprayed an allover this past Saturday with production clear & 1.3 , it is slick as glass. Probably the best off the gun I have ever sprayed. I have sprayed the universal with 5000 1.4 & really nice also. I want to try universal with 1.3, I have Iwata`s lph, lv & supernovas they don`t even compare for clear. I absolutely love the 5000`s. The 1.4 came from local jobber & 1.3 from ebay Italy, shown above, amazingly received it in 3 days & it is genuine Sata. Good luck making choice..

Thank you very much, especially for the input on the Italy ebay gun.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to NOT order that gun for under $500 shipped.

No, not at all. Why do you ask?

I'm curious to know what gun settings are you guys using with the SATA 5000, either 1.4 or 1.3.

Pressure at the wall.
Pressure at the gun, cheater valve or diaphragm regulator?

Fluid and fan adjustment?
Distance of gun to the panel?
Overlap?

Any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated.

I will add that I'm an spi mobile jobber, so I get to paint maybe twice a week if I'm lucky. Some shops have very nice air and spray booth setups, other not so much. I always make sure to bump the wall pressure to at least 120psi and always use high flow fittings. Some of the shops I get to spray in the wall pressure barely reaches 100psi.

The more I use the SATA the better I'm getting at it, but I still can't match the Iwatas.

Sata 5000 1.4
1-1.25 turns out fluid
Fan wide open
Iwata diaphram
Milton hvlp ends
Wall psi 160
Trigger pulled 40 psi

just to clarify for myself as well, that's 1 - 1.25 out from closed?

Also the miltons, V type "hi flow"?

OK to follow up on this SATA 5000 thing.....

Today I sprayed a couple of jobs, a front end plus door.

And a fender and front bumper.

1.25 turns out for fluid.
Fan wide open.
Wall pressure 120 psi.
Iwata cheater valve at 30 psi with trigger pulled.
Spray distance 6", 70% overlap.

I did way better than before, bit of texture that matched the factory finish perfectly. Before the clearcoat was looking too heavy, I was loading it too much.

I was spraying the 5100-1 Euro BTW.

I'll try bumping my pressure to 36/38 and finally 40 psi and see where it goes from there. I'm happier with today's results.

Thanks alot for sharing your settings JWolfe.

Yes milton hi flow and the fluid is from when i start to get a mist out of gun this setting is not environmentally friendly if you know what i mean but for me the end result is great. If i was still spraying spies I'd be broke using this setup

sorry to keep bugging you about it but this is an RP, not an HVLP, correct?

Alright, I'm leaning towards the sata 5000 b rp, just need to decide if I want 1.4 or 1.3.

Again, all my sprays are overalls and I'd like to settle into the SPI universal as my "house clear" for all projects.

Everybody says these guns are hosers, my old ways and old way of thinking have me thinking I need 1.4 for what I want to do with it. Am I going to wish I went 1.3?

If I go 1.3, is it going to slow me down?

Dave, sorry for delay been busy yes i have been talking rp i sprayed uni with both guns and they both work fine and i would say 1.3 would be fine for overall my philosophy is you can always back fluid down, but you can only go out so far. It all depends on your technique /spray speed

Thank you.

I would probably select 1.4 if the Italian ebay guy had one right now but he's only got 1.3 right now. But the price.... unbelievable.

I'm ready to give the RP 1.3 a shot, I've shot the last couple jobs with LPH400 1.4, I don't think the 5000 rp 1.3 will be slower than the LPH400 1.4

I ordered the sata 5000 rp in 1.3, I'll order an RTI or Iwata inlet regulator for it and a milton hi-flow.

I should have the gun next week. In time for a complete spray on a 66 chevy caprice.

then a 69 Mach 1, then a 58 plymouth "christine", then another 69 Mach 1, a 69 ranchero, a 69 F100, a 55 chev pickup....

so on and so forth.

:)

Yes, I use my 1.3 for everything. We are a PPG shop, so I mostly spray that. But I use a lot of SPI production clear out of it as well. I originally ordered the gun with the 1.3 for Ppg, then ordered the 1.4 for using it with SPI. It hosed too much for my liking. Know Barry recommends the 1.4 but I have better luck personally on a daily usage of using the 1.3 for everything. The black corvette I just did an overall on was universal clear with the 1.3. Laid super nice and sprayed lovely. I highly recommend the iwata Evo!

I will have a WS400 evo 1.3 to demo starting next week. My local rep let me know this morning (after I ordered the Sata 500B RP last night)

I picked up an RTI MR1 today for the new Sata while I was in at my local supplier's store. Also picked up a whole slug of Milton V couplers and connectors so I can re-fit all my guns, my booth hose and the booth wall coupler.

The most valuable discovery I have made in the past year has been the recommendation to run compressor range PSI to the booth, unregulated all the way through the hose up to the gun.

I freaking love this.

No more pressure bounce, the guns all perform like I got a complete set of new magical spray guns. Also, since I'm always spraying all-overs I can sometimes accidentally step on or kneel on or pinch the hose between my calf and thigh while kneeling to paint. If there is a way to accidentally pinch a hose while at open trigger, I've done it. It's way too easy to accidentally pinch off a 15-40 psi air hose while spraying. A clear coat spit on a fender sucks.

With 150 psi all the way to the gun, it's really hard to accidentally squeeze off that hose.

Seriously, I just can't say enough about mini diaphragm regulators at the gun, high pressure all the way through the hose. It's the only way to go for me.

.

Just that other companies clear that run 4:1:1 usually flow better at that low pressure. When I told the guys on the phone my problem they say to get over 40 to be able to atomize the universal clear.

I got my sata 5000 from italy today. Didn't have time to play with it much. I threw an RTI regulator and a hi flow fitting on it. I kind of preset the knobs, set it down and got back to work. I sold a 69 charger and transport showed up to get it in our sub zero temps... terrible day fighting frozen, broken junk outside.
