ok, heres the scoop: i have heard nothing but good about SPI products and have been wanting to give em a shot. so, a friend has a 98 GMC sierra club cab that is in very good condition, cept for the rocker panels, the truck has been very well taken care of and there is not other rust.
replaced the rockers on the passenger side recently and goin to the drinvers side rockers in a few weeks. now, the thing is the clear has started failing on the roof in very little spots( and only a few) and i can see very little spots on top of the fenders, so i'm talkin to hom about shooting a few coats of clear on the hole thing.
so, he has done some research on SPI and has read the same things as me ( the products are great) but theres too many dam choices of clear!!
i've narrowed it down to either production or universal clear. been reading through posts and complicating the crap out of this!! but its still better than goin to walmart and choosing which toilet paper to get!;)

the truck is gonna stay with him for a lot longer. so i could really use someone elses thinkin here on which one to chose, please!

First things first the clear is not going bad on the pickup but the base is and causing the clear to go bad, only reason I brought this up is you mention little spots and it cannot be a spot repair job as in no time other spots will appear shortly after painted and most likely they will develop faster then they would have, if not re-painted.

On to the clear, if doing outside a paint booth use the Universal as it is better for garage type environments.

ok, now im confused. if the base was goin bad, wouldnt it have happened a long time ago? doesnt clearcoat failure cause the bc to go bad?
my plan was to take the areas where the cc is bad down to primer and repaint them areas, then clear the whole truck. i personally would love to repaint the whole thing, but it is red, victory red, and it is quite pricey for my friend to do a complete repaint.

and yes, outside a booth, so now i know which clear anyways.

That's a chicken or the egg question and doesn't really matter, once the clear is coming off the base, the base degrades rapidly and should not be cleared over because it is oxidized and no good.

Crash is right, I'm blaming it on the base because of the way you state it is coming off and yes, it can be caused by clear being to thin or a low grade clear with poor UV protection but some colors, like red, silvers the base tends to self destruct and of course it always looks like the clear is failing.
Famous for this is the Mercedes and BMW silvers with the type of flakes they use it is not uncommon to see the clear coming off the top surfaces in five -6 years.

Either way the base is shot at this point.

hmmmm. may be time for complete repaint. i'll talk with my friend. hopefull he can scrounge the $$ for it. might be something that will wait for spring. thanks for the assistance and will definately be starting to use the universal clear.
