Came across this statement today. What everyone here opinion?
"That's not true..1.2 & 1.3 are for high solids...1.4 is a medium Solid tip but will work with high solids...
Ask you paint tech..i used to be one...i now own a paint store and a large collision center. I used to tech for ppg matrix spies hecker. If someone is telling u 1.3 is for medium solids they are wrong. It will work but 1.2- 1.3 is high solid tips"

My 2 cents.....Technically what he is saying is correct. .What the guy is saying is that the smaller the tip the better the atomization (provided you have a high quality gun capable of atomizing properly). In theory a 1.2 or 1.3 tip will atomize better than a 1.4....all other things being equal, but the 1.4 will allow more material through it. The trade off is less material better atomized through the gun versus more material lesser atomized. Also what works for one guy doesn't always work for another. Best to test for yourself.

Oh and according to that theory it really shouldn't matter if you run a medium solid through a 1.2 or 1.3 as it will just be more finely atomized. When in doubt you should always go with what the Gun Manufacturer says as opposed to what the Paint Manufacturers tech data sheet calls for. At least that's what I've always done.

Universal will not come out of any 1.2 and some 1.3 but some high solids do work in a 1.2.
Since we use no fillers to make our clear look thicker then it is, that is why ours will not spray out of a 1.2, its been tried many of times by many high end painters.
Fillers evaporate and are not solids. Another giveaway, if a painter is using a so called high solids and air pressure at wall is 80lbs and it works, the universal will not do well at all with 80lbs at wall.

I have experience with this. I previously used spies 8035 clear sprayed 20 liters through a 1.2rp 4000 worked great. Switched to universal Barry said it wouldn't spray through a 1.2. If you observe the two clears side by side the spies appears twice as thick so i tried anyway and like barry said universal wouldn't spray, thats when barry schooled me on fillers.
Thanks Barry

Forgot to say that follow gun manufacturers advice over the Paint Manufacturers except in the case of SPI. It seems Barry and his crew have tested a lot of guns and he offers real support (someone you can talk to and get a knowledgeable answer) as opposed to most of the major manufacturers and their paint reps. Sorry for the slight Barry.

For sure, I still see tech sheets from some of the majors recommending air pressure settings even though they have no idea what gun is in your hand LOL

I have sprayed uv clear thru lph400 1.3 tip orange cap but it seemed to spray better with the gravity plus with 1.4 tip. I have 2 gravity plus guns one of which I use 1.4 to spray spi epoxy with. It seems to lay it down good.

Why would some company's use fillers in there clear other then to make them seem thicker then they real are?
Do they put fillers in BC/CC and SS Also?

I am officially confused (easily done tho). I looked up spies 8035 MSDS and it says its solids is 52% by volume and 57% by weight and UV MSDS says solids is 59% then why will spies work with 1.2 and UV will not?

They do it it save money, like buying a huge bag of chips and when you open it only 1/4 of the bag is full the rest is useless air, but you sure thought you were getting your moneys worth. They also do tricky crap in the base also with useless fillers. It use to be that you could do 3 coats and get full coverage now there are colors that need up to 8-9 yellow being one of the worst unless you use a value shade and sometimes that is only a small help. I really see it progress (get worse) fast in the last 10yrs.

As far as the tip size, the guy needs to get some real world experiance. I personally wouldn"t listen to anything he had to say.
