Thinning SPI epoxy

I have no problem with runs shooting epoxy but I do have solvent pop. Maybe I am laying it on too thick? Since I don't have runs I was wondering if I could thin the epoxy a little to help the solvents get out. Is this the correct approach and if so what material and what ratio do I use for thinning? I want to shoot my last 2 coats of epoxy before base goes on in September.

99 times out of a 100, epoxy solvent pop is because either air pressure is to low at gun or a primer gun with a big tip is used. However with that said very rarely does a big tip gun cause solvent pop as you are putting on more but because of that, it is saying wet longer.

You would be surprised what 3-5 more lbs of air pressure will do, for smoothness and no solvent pop--clear or epoxy.

Reducer can be used to compensate for the air pressure and will help.

You know what, I bumped the pressure last time and it did make a difference. I'll go a little more, thanks!
As far as the gun goes. I am using an Iwata LPH-400 with the silver cap and 1.4 needle. I believe that is correct as the base cap is orange?

Not to hijack this thread, but is the purple Harbor Freight gun with the 1.4 tip adequate for spraying SPI epoxy primer? I also have an Iwata LPH-400 but would rather use it for base and clear only.

Not familiar with the HF gun. What you want is a gun that atomizes well for the epoxy for good results.

The nice thing about epoxy, is about any gun with a 1.4 tip should spray it like a base coat.

76,

I have that gun and shoot SPI White Epoxy through it with no problems. I also have the 2.2 or is it the 2.0 tip for it and shoot the Grey High built through it.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try out the HF gun for this particular phase and see how it goes. No better area to test the gun out than the underside of the car. :D

packin, the kit I bought has the 1.4 tip and the 1.8 tip. A guy over on the Camaro board I am on is a pro painter and he swears by the HF gun for spraying primers.
