Spraying SPI single stage with a 1.3 tip??

I'm really set on using SPI single stage black but I'm concerned about the 1.4 tip requirement. With my gun all that's available is a 1.3, 1.5 and a 1.8. I'm using a devilbiss finishline that I've had forever and absolutely love. No it's not a high end gun but it works for me and I can lay out beautifully with it.

My question is can the single stage be sprayed with a 1.3? Am I asking for trouble? I can't afford to plop down $$ for a new gun. I have SPI epoxy laid down under some slick sand and will be using the epoxy, reduced, for sealer. Am I just better off going with someone else's topcoat or will I be ok with a 1.3 or a 1.5 tip?

Thanks in advance for any help!

For the black use the 1.5 and choke in, The 1.3 May work, I just don't know and my main concern with the 1.3 is the possibility of changing the polarity and black going to a brown shade, not sure, just a thought.

Awesome! Thanks Barry! I'll be calling in tomorrow to get some shiny stuff on the way. I'll play around with settings and see how I like the 1.5. Maybe shoot some on a test panel with both tips and see if there's a difference in tone and see which one I like best.

It is not something you will see unless the two panels are held together (outside) and you are back on an angle and trust me, you don't want to see a brown shade.
Unless someone here has sprayed the Black with a 1.3, I would not gamble.

Barry, i am in no way qestioning your knowlege. you have me curious, i have never heard of a color or paint having a polarity? can you explain a bit... you arent talking an electric polarity positive negative are you? couldnt be a magnetic polarity... i am just trying to get my simple mind around it.

The carbon in the black is very polar and all your solvents also have some type of a charge, to make black black is a matter of how fine you grind / mill the carbon, so anything that can change the polarity like a crap reducer or a fast reducer will cause the carbon to clump together and look like a crap black that was not milled right.

Keep this in mind, I turned a large batch of black - brown shad by adding a few "grams" of something to a "3000Lb++ batch" (don't remember all the facts)
Had to pay to haul off.

Advice taken, thanks for the explanation of polarity! Got my order in yesterday morning so hopefully, if time permits, I'll be spraying over the weekend.

Sprayed the cab today and it turned out great!! Used the 1.5 tip like you recommended and I couldn't be happier! Was very easy to glass it out and the flow was just incredible. I'll figure out how to post pictures and get one up. The little icon at the top just turns my screen dim and don't do anything...
