Sorry If I am beating a dead horse. Need base coat recommendations for UV clear

RWDXTACY

I am about to paint my dads 280z. It will be a full re spray. I talked him into getting SPI primers and UV clear. The only local jobber is a Sherwin williams guy. I have never had any issues with Sherwin williams paint but I have never sprayed any metallics from them. I do not mind ordering base coat off line. I hear great things about pro spray but have no clue how to get it. Can you guys give me some good recommendations on what base coats will work well for me? I searched around and found a couple of old threads. I figured things may have changed by now so i just make a new thread.

thanks!

Thanks. Any other recommendations out there? I go quoted at 750 a gallon for Dark red metallic base from sherwin williams. And that is their dimensions line. I have used this paint but never sprayed any metallics. If I am going to shell out that kind of money I would rather go with a brand with a great reputation. Here are pics of the 280z. How much base would you guys recommend me buy? I do not think it will take more than 3 quarts to do the car. I am going to prime the car with SPI regular build and block it down before painting so I am going to want 3 solid coats worth of base on top of that. I figured 3 quarts reduced is going to be a gallon or so and should be enough. I am not doing bay or jams.

P.S. the car has much nicer wheels now. Those came with the car.

Ide lay down some spi epoxy to seal it up really well before the 2k . I have been using restoration shop line from TCP global, (only for complete jobs). Done about 20 cars with it without a single problem, and the price is a lot better. I would also use SPI reducer for everything, the slowest one you can get away with.

Sounds like someones feeding you a line? All I use is Sherwin Williams or senour which is the same. Ultra is kinda high but for diminsions that way off unless their some odd formula or something I don't know about. The also have another base called pro/base or atx that's in between the two that's a better match for collision work than dimension but not quite as good as ultra. The last metallic I got was a burgundy for a buick Lucerne and it wasn't but around $70 to $85 or so quart for pro/base. I just got a quart of pro/base Olympic white today and it was $60 and diminsions is probably only $35 or $40. I know some colors like red are high but those prices seem off to me.

Kate has been answering the phones and helping out with paint orders so i am unsure if you called or not today, but did you give us a ring?
I know we won't be that high for a gallon of base.

No not yet. Still doing some research. My good friend from highschool worked at the local sherwin williams and he was the one that gave me the quote at 750 for a gallon. It blew me away. Thinking back on it that may have been for atx. He mentioned that atx had a better resin in the base to help spray metallics. Regardless it still seemed high. Chad I am about to PM you.

the 750 was a quote for dimensions. That is their lower end line. Then atx, then ultra. I have used sherwin williams but I know there are better base coats out there. I just spent 500 on SPI products, I would like to complement them with a good base coat. That is why I made this thread. To see what other options I have. I Pmd you chad

I have no problems with Sherwin williams there just as good to me as any other brand for base. Every paint has its good and bad, I have no idea how dimension is quoted at $750. I was only replying to youre question but sounds like youre dead against Sherwin Williams, sorry for the reply but that price is wrong or I get a hell of a deal.

Maybe the worker there looked up the price for Ultra by accident. I would double check tomorrow.

I will see what we can come up with tomorrow for you.. I need to get a second database for my laptop..

Prospray--Chad.

Is Prospray a source for base match colors that are compatible with SPI? Do they older custom mix colors by code?

Pro-Spray is based on factory paint codes, just like all of the majors.. It can be hit and miss with some really older colors that are not a popular color. But in many cases formulas can still be formulated and added to the database.

And yes.. works great with SPI

Chad, Im looking for a 1956 Ford F-100 color called Meadow Green. But from your response, it may be hit or miss. Does that mean hit or miss on availability or color match?

Availability.. A lot of times if a color is not in the database they will generate it though.. Problem is that it may take a while.

About to shoot some panels today with the prospray base through my devilbiss plus and SPI UV clear through my lph400 lv 1.4. I am pretty excited.

If anyone is curious Prospray makes a great base coat. The pearl in the base is very nice and uniform. the base covers well and lays out super flat. I put 3 coats of red on over the gray spi sealer. I almost think I could have gotten away with 2 but better safe than sorry.

One of the things I like about the Pro-Spray pearls is that they are a blended pearl,, meaning that they are not in powder form, they are on the mix machine and mixed daily just like the toners, Now they do have the Xirillic pearls that have to be shaken by hand, but they are still liquid.. I have personally always preferred this over powder pearls..

Glad you like the product!!
