Small bodyshop guys

I don't know how they do it, then again I have been with them for years 20? and never had a claim.

Zero deductible on comp and collision.
500,000 Lia
$85,000 agreed value
300,000 UN Mot

somewhere around $400 a year.

Same with $55,000 and around $300 a year.

My personal cars with state Farm I carry $1000 ded on comp and collision 250/500 lia as i have their Umbrella and each car is around $700-800 a year, been with them for 15 years+ and never had a claim but I also get a house insurance discount because they insure that also.

So you pay them $700 and they are on the hook for over $1M. Sure there are quite a few people, like you, that have paid the premiums for years with no claims. I would assume that they are in business, like the others, to make money by investing and such. They bank on the higher number not filing claims, thus paying to support the others. I would figure that Haggerty would not have near as many insured as say State Farm or one of the others. They must not have as many billionairs working for them.

Haggerty and the other classic car insurers have rules that reduce the number of claims. You have to have at least as many cars as drivers insured with a regular carrier like State Farm. If it's just you and your wife, you can only insure your third car (and beyond) with Haggerty. You can't use the car to commute to work and there's a mileage limit (you pay more to drive more). One policy I looked at required you to belong to a club or association and the car was only covered when used for their event-related activities.

Oh yeah, you also have to provide photographs of the car that are clear enough to indicate its condition.

This is why I chose Haggerty over the others, my wife can drive to work on a nice day and even take it shopping, now none of this on a regular basis but on occasion, no problem.
She may take car twice a year to work, me last week took vette, yesterday dropped off T-bird up there (parked inside) so I will have a car to drive if needed as Sequoia is getting painted this week.
I'm spending the week at plant, so may use T-bird to go to bank and bowling wed night but that will be about it.

Another reason we went, is we can on occasion park the car at a hotel if we spend a night somewhere, others you could not.

I think most people that have play toys, like we all do, are pretty good risks, we normally have the car in sight and I always have my gun on me, in case someone runs into my car. LOL That would not be covered!

Aaron,
Liability insurance is actually quite cheap. When I worked as a consultant (sole proprietor) my contract with America Online required $1M liability insurance. My homeowner and auto insurance carrier charged $300 a year extra for the $1M umbrella (had to have $300K on the car and house policies).

The cost of liability insurance is dependant on the chances of a valid payable claim. Some bean counter decides how much chance there is and sets the rates accordingly. If you were working as a bouncer at a bar and ask for an umbrella liability policy it would be a different story.

Here just 10 years ago, any shop would just wish ST Farm would not walk in door and shops called them every name in the book.
After the two law suits one for aftermarket parts and the one for steering to drp shops, they are now the best to deal with.
Now everyone hates Nationwide, geico and progressive, in this area.

That's weird, around here it's the opposite. nobody wants to deal with state farm and would prefer progressive, i guess it has a lot to do with the adjusters to.

At my buddies shop(chrysler dealership) he will send me pics all the time from his progressive work.

Take for instance, a fender. Hit in the front, previous dent(big dent) towards the rear. They will make them just repair the front and repaint the huge dent at the rear of the fender. He sends me pics all the time. I will start sharing them. Its rather funny!

I tried to get Haggerty's to insure my Datsun. I think I asked for $8,000 agreed value...? When they called to talk and asked me what I drove it to, they said that if I ever drove it to work, they couldn't cover it. Back to State Farm I went.
