Reduce Orange Peal in Epoxy Primer

Mopar Nut
Hi,
I am working on my first car in over thirty years and I am loving the new technology products and SPI. Having the epoxy primer sand able is a life saver for me since I am likely sanding too much off when I block it :)

I have a coat of epoxy on the bare metal with 2 blockings complete with 2 coats of high build each. I am really close to being straight so I planned on a coat of epoxy to seal up the few spots I sanded through to the metal while blocking. A few coats and a _very_ careful blocking will tell me how close I really am.

My last shots with the epoxy came out with a lot of orange peel. It would be nice to have a fairly smooth surface to look at reflections before I continue. Would adding a bit of reducer to the epoxy help lay it down smoother or should it have gone down smooth and it was the nut behind the spray gun at fault?

Thanks
Jim

That's what i started doing...just a small amount seems to make a difference

Oh crud I only have retarder since I am spraying in 100 degree weather. The tech sheets don't talk about retarder in the epoxy (exactly) is it safe to use the retarder in the epoxy?

I would not do it, the retarder could cause way to many problems, orange peel better choice.

too big . i use a 2.0 but finish is no concern. if you want it smooth you must use a 1.4 or smaller.

At least the recommend 30 minutes

It just seemed to imply that the first coats you sprayed were fine, then the final coat you used for sealer had orange peel, So were all your coats the same orange peel then?

I would like to say I carefully calculated what I needed to do and it came out great…. Truth is I have no idea what I did and it came out great :). It may have been that today was more humid than when I was spraying in 100 degree 7% humidity. Today was about 85 and 40% humidity. Couple coats of high build, some blocking and a final Epoxy Primer coat with a wet sand and I am ready to order my base coat and clear from SPI!
