Price increases!

At what point is enough for these price increases?? I'm not talkin spi here, talking all the others. It's every year. sometimes twice a year.

Price of paint is just getting down right rediculous.

alot has to do with the volume of paint sold being less. so they have to make up the difference in raising price. kind of a reverse supply and demand.

Not until the medium to small shop votes with their feet. Sorry just a fact.

Who do you think pays for that downdraft booth or the $50,000 to one million dollar check (biggest I know of for one year) written to that big shop in town, so they will use their paint.
The medium and small shops pay it in price increases, not to even mention the big discount they get off the color line, if they are under contract.

Vote with your wallet and feet, Metalux, Prospray, Matrix.

and how about the big shops that dont pay there bills either...

I quit useing DuPont chromabase just this past summer.
I hate not dealing with that jobber because the guy at the counter
is like a friend of mine now.
But they've raised their prices twice each year for the past several,
enough is enough.
I'm now buying from a "Stories" jobber and useing Metalux and Genstar.
It's half the cost and I'm getting better color matches.
I would gladly pay more for better matches, it's not just the price.
They have a good clear for less than the SPI but I still buy the SPI.
When comparing costs per fender, the clear is pennys difference so I'm
going to use what works best and helps me the most.
And having Barry for help doesn't hurt.
I'm really not as cheap as Barry thinks, but if I were, me buying his
product should be a really good sign, and compliment.
It's "value" not the price.

well i gotta say, biggest shop in town here, by size and volume, doesn't have a contract and gets the highest discount. Never has had a contract. Nothing supplied to them from the paint company other than the paint. their acct is in the 30-40 k range. I think, if more shops were like that and more independent...it would be a whole different story. Honestly, if it keeps getting higher over the next few years, the "big" shops and ALL the smaller and medium shops who arent under a contract will leave them behind. I will be one of them, even though i might only spend 3-4k a month in their liquid.

Both matrix and metalux are in town, and havent had any luck with either of them. Both jobs we had to respray. but that was a few years ago, and i cant say that the guys selling us the product knew their stuff.

well once 6h takes in affect. it will hurt the little guys even more

paint prices are of no interest to me. quality and performance is. my reason for dropping dupont was their product sucked. the reason i dropped ppg is their product sucked. i dont do collision work and dont need collision products. i still use concept for color but wont put ppg clear on my mower. they will never stop gigging small shops because they still have all the google warriors who swear by ppg. even though they have never used it. you see guys posting all day long about it but when you ask it's " well i haven't shot it yet but " . just like the duplicolor crap or por15 .

Very good point, Sik you try and go 60-90 days without paying and yet still get your orders, don't think so.

I think there is a pro-spray jobber in Augusta, not sure how far you are from there, He is the same guy that bought the Sikkens store in Columbia a couple of months ago (state Auto paint- glenn), seems to me they also have Metalux and Sikkens as well as Prospray at the Augusta location and I'm sure Glenn will put it in State, as they will just go nowhere with only Sikkens.

I have made a suggestion to my BASF/ SPI jobber in Greer, SC to look at Metalux and Prospray, few weeks ago because I did not know it was in town.

nothing pisses me off more than arguing with some one about cheap paint. if 50 dollars is going to break you then you in the wrong hobby . buy a fishing pole............. minnows are cheap .

one thing i have learned is brand name means little . proof is in the pudding..........

Shine, what kind of base coat do you prefer?...who do you think makes the best base coat and single stage paint?

The problem I run into is trying to "educate" the customer. They nearly faint when they see material cost estimates and then jump online to show me that they can get the same color paint for less.
Had a potential customer who wanted a MG midget painted in two-tone with a pin strip. Wanted the whole thing done for $500 and said he would supply the paint - told him to find someone else because I won't attach my name to work like that.

hard to say. first i dont like base coat . i prefer single stage. i use ppg concept but plan to try prospray ss .. i used the prospray base for the 56 210 . seemed very much like ppg . shot well. covered ok. the code 16gm took a few coats but then it covers like crap in any brand.

Which is why i've always stuck with sikkens...but at some point enough is enough. I mean 97 bucks for a gallon reducer, retail. I've never been too concerned about prices with quality materials, other shops will beat themselves up and always have the newest and lowest priced products on their shelves. Cost of doing business i suppose. It's getting to the point where it is almost impossible to make any profit off of material sales. Not talking about making a killing.

Barry, interesting stuff! I wasn't even aware there was a store in columbia that carried sikkens. Only 1.5hr away. Augusta is about 2.5 hrs away.

Maybe as these other companies start moving in we'll see a change (too much hope? LOL). I tell you though, i caught all kinda flak from my rep when he saw SPI boxes all over the shop..lol

so pro spray base coat is as good as deltron ppg? I find base coat to be a necessity to spray when dealing with metallics and such. I have had pretty good luck with Diamont base over the years as well as Glasurit.

I am losing money on paint. I paid 14% more than I was able to charge, and I'm not even using a premium line. The problem is with base coat color, for instance a quart of S-W U7034 maroon is now $248.

I want to change, but last I heard, Pro-Spray at least wanted me to foot the whole bill for a new machine and toners.

There must be some middle ground, like lease the machine and get the first toners at cost as necessary, or something. The up front cost of switching is just too great.

they put the machines in to keep you using their product. my machine belonged to me . that way i could change any time . when i was running 6 -10 + vans a day it kept them nervous.

Good lord....foot the WHOLE bill!?!?! Sikkens installed a machine-full of toners and 1 backup, computer, and 2 cabinets full of all the supplies (liquid and bodyshop supplies) i need. They come once a week and replace what i have used. No upfront charges.

Apparently I am too small to rate that level of service, though viewed in the long run I am definitely a money maker for the paint company.
