Panel repair advice needed

On my 65 Corvette coupe, my right rear passenger side fender is missing a portion of the return flange on the bottom side as you can see in this picture. This is where the rear valence bolts to, so I am missing some of the attachment points. What is the best way to fix this problem?

Thanks,
Brian

There are a couple guys on here, jeremy, shine, or flynams, that have the know how to do it, I am not one of them,LOL.

The missing area needs to be fabricated from 'glass and resin. This isn't terribly difficult, but an area that that might be a bit of a learning curve for someone new to the process. I may have time to write a bit about how I would do it, but as SOF says, there are others with even more 'glass experience than me here, so they should have first crack.

Do you have a good rear valance on hand? I'd think it would be helpful in deciding how to form your new flange area.

It looks like the vertical part of the bonding strip that bolts to the rear valance is missing. You won't have to put the whole bonding strip on. just splice the part that you need as the whole strip goes up and ties the tail panel to the quarter.

Thanks for all of the quick replies. I didn't realize that was a bonding strip, I will take some better pictures this weekend and post them.

the part is cheap and not a structural piece. just order the strip and piece it in using a bonding agent like fusor or evercoat .

It is actually for fastening the rear exhaust panel. Below is a better picture along with a picture of the driver's side that is not broken. I haven't found this piece online anywhere yet, but I'm still looking...

Are you talking about the part with the arrow pointing to it? Isn't that the the bonding strip for the taillight panel, not the exhaust panel?

Yes, it is all one bonding strip. Take a good look at the one on the left side and you'll see that it's all one piece. I usually cut it along the line that you can see where your tail light socket is hanging against in the picture of the driver side. Carefully remove or grind down the broken lower part of the strip. Grind all the old bonding adhesive off the quarter panel where the new lower strip will be bonded. Cut the new bonding strip to match the part you removed (at your cut line). Next, I put 2" masking tape along the edge of the exhaust panel where it bolts to the bonding strip ( so bonding adhesive won't stick to it) punch a hole through the tape for the bolt. Mix up the bonding adhesive (I use Fiberglass Evercoat #994 - SMC adhesive, but you could use # 870 since it's not a structural repair), apply a generous amount and install it. Now install your exaust panel with all bolts and make sure that the exhaust panel to quarter junction is how you want it. Tape it flush if needed. Let it sit overnight or an hour ( depending on which bonding adhesive you've used). After cured, remove exhaust panel and finish as required.

It takes a bit of finesse. I usually use a thin, flexible putty knife worked between the two pieces on a curved section like that.
