painting in pieces

i get hammered about painting in pieces as much as using epoxy for build. i just had someone ask me about this . my advice is forget all that cutting in bs and paint it. then put it together. i do every car this way. i only get paid to build it once. well this person then proceeds to tell me how it cant be done that way , wont match , i'll chip it bla bla bla . i will not type what i told him to do with his car.

why do i do it ???

if i get the body together and something doesn't match all it would need is a tie coat and reclear. lot less overspray and mess on your fresh black chassis. but i honestly don't remember the last one that didn't match. i did the sun gold 56 chevy truck in pieces and the bed was paint months later. looks fine. same with the vette . as long as you get true color you will be fine. i've seen countless threads with post warning not to do it .

now this is my .02 on the matter and worth just what you paid for it.

candies are a world of their own. peals or metallic i shoot in pieces. some of the newer colors look to be a real pia . seems all i paint is red and black sometimes.

When painting pieces off the car, does it matter how they are hung or laid out? Would I need to hang a door and lay a hood flat, for example?

YES! it matters. you need to hang the door as it would be on the car and lay the hood flat. this only applies for mettalic colors though.

i try to paint as much a part as i can. i do it all at one time with metallic colors...even though it can be done with some time apart, i just dont try to chance it. i'll get everything colored in.....rough assemble them back on the car...do my final coat of base, blow back apart and clear everything seperate.

if it is a body and frame i'll either paint on a dolly (after final fit and block on the frame) or mount to the finished frame after the final sand..then do the same process as above. booth has a lot to do with painting one on the chassis....overspray isn't an issue with a downdraft booth and everything wrapped up tight.

against my will i'm having to do the vette on the complete chassis.......i got under it the other day to check it out and other than some dust from it being in the bodyshop, is clean.

the paint kahuna likes me. he smiles on my paint and makes it match :) color on.jpg

i keep plenty of barrels around . i also have a roller to mount doors to . i use it most of the time . i also have one for fenders and hoods . makes it easier to move things around.door ready.jpg

I"m going to have to paint the C-10 apart, or at very least, base it, take it apart then clear, but I probably won't be ambitous enough for that, but it is going to be a HIGH pearl orange. we will see.

Hey guys, I'm pretty new around here and just doing my first paint on my own car. I'm old an slow so thought the best way to get it done was to blow it apart and paint a couple of pieces at a time. Shine, I hope those kahuna thingies are looking out for me, too! I'm pretty nervous about it matching, or not, I don't even look at it too closely now, afraid of what I might see. Oh yeah, just to raise the bar a bit I'm two toning:eek:. Mazda Stormy Blue J35, over Mazda Comet Gray D47, both metallic.

I think I came up with a pretty cool trick, I mounted my doors on a couple of engine stands. Really easy to roll them 360* so I don't have to stoop to get the bottoms done.

Ciao for now

I always hang mine from the ceiling with chains.
I get less dirt than laying flat.

(P.S. I always paint in pieces)

I'm doing the same thing, HF had them on sale and its working great, nice to be able to sit down and do a little final metal work on them as well.

I almost always paint in pieces. I will also take my gallon of freshly mixed and shaken base coat and break it up into quarts for color consistency start to finish... I will also buy an extra quart or two when doing the body underside, trunk, inside trunk lid and hood, etc. Depending on the size of the vehicle.

Shine, if one was using more than one container of color, would there be any benefit to mixing both then re-canning them so that they are truly matched?

Painting in pieces is one thing.

But what about painting pieces sepratley and on different days?

Ex: doors one day, cab onother??

If you use the same gal mix and spray the same it will match.

10/2010 sprayed the decklid
9/2011 sprayed fenders and doors
3/2013 sprayed the body

i paint some pieces months apart . cab first so i can start building while getting everything else ready .
