oil canning while polishing?

I just watched this video on polishing with 3D polish and the whole time he was working the polish on the trunk lid the metal was caving and popping. It kind of made me cringe a few times. Is he using a ton of pressure or is the metal that weak or poorly braced?
And if it's the pressure do you typically use a lot of pressure? I learned to just use a firm steady pressure.

The action starts at 5:40

No that is not normal. If I have something that starts moving, I will hold the polisher or DA so that as little weight as possible is on the panel to keep it from oil canning like that. Even in normal situations the most pressure you would use is simply the weight of the machine on the panel. Kind of reminds me of the Eastwood video where they are demonstrating their "fender roller" and destroy a fender in the process.

Mike Phillips is a fixture in the detailing world. He really was pressing down. He must have been using the 500 and not the 510.

I think he had to lean into it to speed the process for the video. He was only doing a flat section with no edges and he was using an orbital.

None of my business, BUT I get calls every week about how to buff, and the first thing I tell them is all you do is hold the buffer steady and never apply pressure.
That statement is always questioned!

All the more reason to follow the process that Jim C recommends.
