Black paint is great news. Now I can get on the program w SPI and not have to worry about compatibility of other stuff.

Edit, I am a little concerned at your comment that you may only make one batch. What is touchup is needed in the future? I am sure this is a newbie type question. I also realize that blacks and esp. flat blacks are all difficult to touchup.

Well we hope a one batch deal is not the case BUT we are coming out with two products, Matte clear and a Matte black and no two people can ever agree on what shade is perfect.
We are doing the best we can to get ours in a neutral corner to please the majority of the people but we know, we will not please all.
I think we have a winner that any shop can make work for them with a little playing but bottom line is in business, the inventory must turn.

No quarts, we made the decision to price the gallons cheap enough that a person would have to be drunk to buy a competitors quart

Hopefully I'll have enough black jobs coming in this summer to justify the entire gallon- one job uses less than a sprayable quart (motorcycles) and I'm not a very busy person, just kinda starting my business. I guess I'll just have to use flattening agent in UV clear for my customer that wants flat black BC/CC (unless maybe I van buy a little stock off someone else)
I'll always use SPI for everything though as long as it remains affordable, that's the reason I started with UV clear and epoxy primer since I could get them in small quantities.

Most of the time for basecoat I end up buying a pint of nason at a time, unless its a common color like red, black, or white. I'd be fine with paying more for base, just not 6 times more per quart (the majors)

What made the white single stage so high? A gallon of Dupont Imron 555(mixing white) is only $188 and you get a full gallon. We use that on the vast majority of our jobs. Although the activator is more expensive it hardly seems worth the gamble to try something new for so little difference. Spi is known for great products at great prices. Just surprised the single stage is so much more expensive on a relative basis than your other fine products.

Well there were many of days and hours put into pricing that including sample prices from every major company out there.
We don't want to be the cheapest and be compared to the bottom feeders and we don't want all the SS business out there, as we could not handle it without hurting our main business. Today was first day we had labels for the SS and we sold 80% of the white stock today and the big buyer will be Canada as that is why we made it for his trucking company and the volume, so he may get short changed when he orders this week.
Another reason we picked that price is like the basecoat, as we come out with other colors, they will all be the same price except for reds.

We have to look at the color business, since this is not our main business, as if it sells fine if not, we bail but most important, there are a number of you that know part of the story with the Honda, as the final straw when we decided to stop making colors and that was our fault for being to cheap and attracting that type of business, we don't want that business.

I really admire the willingness to NOT be the biggest and baddest out there.

But in a sense, I think SPI is......because it has nothing to do with how big your plant is or if your name is a house hold name (like ppg). Big things, small packages.
