Hey guys, its me again, I just sprayed my base coat (dbc) and in a few areas it looks like a spider web. I put two coats on, the first did it, so I sanded the spots down and cleaned them with the spi alcohol based cleaner and shot my second coat, only to have the same thing happen again.

Since im using dbc, i need to clear within 24 hours, and im stuck at what I should do now because I have no idea whats causing this, any help is appriciated, and I attached a picture of what im talking about.

only certain spots turned out like that, 90% of the rest of the car looks great 2012-08-18_14-47-00_686.jpg

Let me ask you a question.. Are you spraying over sanded 2k, a 2k sealer, sanded epoxy or reduced epoxy as sealer??

Your base is wrinkling/frying n those spots buddy

I am spraying over sanded clear/paint. I had bad orange peel that I had to sand down, and now I am re-spraying the entire car so I can clear it.

BK is right the base is frying something under neath.
Here are the items that the base can fry.
Spray can primer
Enamel
Lacquer putty

In that spot the base is not what needs to come off but what ever is underneath it.

Thanks barry, I believe my father talked to you a few days ago about the bad orange peel we got on our camaro we were spraying hugger orange.

Under the paint i sprayed is either going to be the left over clear (spi universal clear) or a coat of the ppg dbc paint.

Is there a way to fix it without having to completely sand it down? I was reading a few posts that said it could just be caused by me not waiting enough time between coats, could this just be the cause?

If the base was dry when you took the picture it appears to me that you are laying the base on way heavy. Base should be a nice matte finish when dry or it was shot to wet in my experiance.

My guess is that the clear was sanded too thin and is now being lifted because the base wasn't activated or was too fresh. Spot prime the problem areas, spot in your base and let it sit over night. Clear the next day.
I use DBC and the 24 hour to clear window is not written in stone. A lot of the professionals on here have had base (including DBC) set for days before clearing with no problems.

Thanks the base and clear are about a month old. I sanded those parts down and they look rough but they are pretty smooth. I was going to do a test spray with the clear tomorrow to see if it will show or not.

How long can I let the paint sit before clearing?

I have gone as long as 2 days, but they're other members (JimC comes to mind) on here that have posted they have gone a lot longer than a few days with no problem as long as the base doesn't get contaminated with dirt, dust oils etc. If the problem is what I stated, even priming the problem spots might show a shrinkage ring down the road. I think if you just spray more base, the lifting will just reoccur. The sensitive areas need a barrior coat to seal them. I've had success with a water borne primer and sometimes with epoxy primer. Some other members might chime in with their ideas.

i've had the best luck with feathering it out and spraying 2 coats of epoxy when I ran into this type of issue, epoxy always makes a good barrier, I had a hood come in one time that had to have some areas feathered out, sprayed 2k primer and it wrinkled, sanded it back down, two coats of epoxy, sand next day and 2k, problem was solved, been using epoxy under 2k pretty much ever since.

Hey guys I was able to fix the problem areas and get clear on the car. Its not done yet because I ran into some problems unrelated to the clear but hopefully by next weekend I will have it done!
