Hey guys, I'm trying to narrow down a good paint at an affordable price. I'm going to be painting my 69 Camaro Hugger Orange (1st time painter). Motobase seems to be recommended by many guys on here, what about the Sherwin Williams Rod and Custom brand or Shopline plus (JBP), I hear Shopline JB is horrible. Anyone have actual experience using these products ?/ Thank you.

I've used Automotive Art Motobase on several late model panels and it's good quality at a good price point. By good quality I mean good coverage with the three different colors I've used (a dark brown, a light blue, and a white) and excellent match. I can't color match since I'm a hack, so if I do a late model panel I have to spray it as mixed.

I sprayed a 28' foot camper with their single stage and that had excellent coverage as well. That was a solid color but the match was very close to the original (this was a 70's Argosy camper).

The 70 F250 I'm working on currently will get their single stage Ford Candy Apple red as well.

Good price point LOL. He wants 971.00 for a gallon.

Motobase is a great paint IMO. I dont now anything about the SW, but i wont ever spray shopline or nason again if i have anything to say about it.

Everything is expensive now. Price that color out in DBC and compare.

At least if its a complete then maybe the shopline plus is an option. And I say that because you don't have to match or blend.

Me too, never expected that. I was thinking Motobase was in the 700 range, complete guess of course.
I'm no pro, but because you seem to be very cost conscious I'd take a couple of things in to consideration. Let's say you pick the cheapest paint, but it has terrible coverage? Now you're spending more. Or, and probably most important, it fails after a couple of years. Again now you're really out money. Personally that's how I'd base my decisions instead of grumbling about the price of a gallon. No disrespect meant, but as with anything in this world you have to look at the whole picture not just the initial outlay.

Yep, I do have a budget, 700 a gallon is what I was figuring, not a 1,000 and up. Universal clear aint failing lol, I would think the clear is more important than the base, but i am a newbie.
