I've been a member here a while but I didn't realize there was an area to show off your work.
I try not to bother you pros much unless I've got a good question.
Anyway, I'm feeling good right now because I finally got my cab painted. (Actually, I should call it my wife's cab because I'm doing this project for her.)
FINALLY
It seemed like a long time coming to get to this point. A real milestone.
All in all it went pretty well. I'm pleased. I sprayed a single coat of 25% reduced epoxy for a sealer/adhesion coat and then 3 coats of the green. The instructions say to mix it 3-1-1 but I like to reduce a little more so I mixed it at 3-1-2. All was done with my Iwata LPH-400 set at 23 psi at the gun. The paint is Pro-Spray single-stage urethane in RAL-6009 Fir Green.
Here's what I do for my air setup:
I removed the glass from the windows in my garage doors and tape filters over the openings.
On the back wall, I mount 12V fans in the window and they blow outwards.
I still get a little dust but it definitely keeps the bugs out. These little fans move a bunch of air. Since they are 12V radiator fans, they are sealed motors. A got a $30 12V power supply off of ebay that runs them and the fans were left over from an old project car.
A few more pics the next day after untaping and washing:
Here's a couple of close-ups of the paint. You can see a small amount of orange peel in there but it's minimal. I think it really helps to use a slow reducer (SPI) with just a little more than the instructions say to minimize it. I think probably the manufacturers recommend less reducer to keep the VOC's lower. In any case, it seems to work well for me.
Next up.
I'm going to put the bed liner on the cab steps and step side steps as well as the bed sides, front and tailgate. Since I need to put the bed liner on the cab steps before I install the doors, I figured it makes sense for me to do all parts needing bed liner at the same time. I'm going to buy the tintable SEM Pro-Tex kit and tint it with the Fir Green.
Already started that prep:
If anyone's interested in seeing more, I've got a project thread for this truck over on trifive.com.
