LPH400 - First paint gun

Hello all, new to the forum and new to painting. Very appreciative of all the information I have learned so far just by doing a lot of reading on the site. I am looking to purchase my first gun and based on my research am planning on an Iwata LPH400 with the silver cap and 1.4 tip. My goal is to use this for SPI epoxy primer, then base and clear. RIght now I am learning the (very difficult) art of rust repair and the fitting and welding of patch panels. I want to purchase a gun now so that I can spray the panels prior to welding them in especially the insides where they will be inaccessible later. I also thought this might be a good way to start learning how to spray paint well.

Looks like Ebay is the go to place to find the Iwata and the going price is around $500-$550. Does this sound about right? Here are a couple I have found.

Thanks for the help,. Looking forward to learning more as a forum member.

I bought mine used for $200. Cleaned it up real well and have been using it for about 10 years.
So given today's prices, $500 isn't bad. Don't be afraid to contact the seller and offer them less.

Great idea but,

You should get an entry level, cheaper gun for the grunt work.
You'll be using your Ferrari to go mud racing.
We all did,do. Epoxy,Primers are some rather harsh products not exactly gun friendly and I get your intention of a 1 gun plan but you have a Lot to learn yet and even a decent HF knockoff will spray fine "if" you Know how.
Devilbiss has some inexpensive entry guns, which was my first 'good' gun, learned, then stepped up to the lph400.
You can find a good used lph400 on ebay all the time.
Food for thought.

Im an ebay fanatic and use it all the time but be very weary buying things such as spray guns from ebay and amazon, as theyre are a lot of knock offs on there that look almost identical (sometimes even the boxes look identical). For that reason I would buy from a reputable vendor, even if I had to pay a little exyra

Or buy 2 iwata kiwami 4’s. Get a 1.4 for top coats and a 1.8 for primer. Or any size in between you prefer. They’re less than 200 each and the quality is just as good. Unless your after the lvlp aspect. Then the kiwami wider4L is suppose to be the “updated” version of the lph for a little over 300.

Many poo poo it, but, a 3m Performance gun will fit all of your needs. You can buy various spray heads for whatever you are spraying.

Thanks for the advice all. A lot to think about. Right now I think I will go the route of the HF purple gun. All I am doing at this point is epoxy primer and mostly in areas that will not ultimately be seen. I think this will give me an opportunity to learn about spraying and do some more research as well. I will keep my eye on ebay as well as the local classifieds.

This has been a great forum and I am looking forward to learning more from everyone as I progress in my journey.

Years ago I bought horrible fright when they were ten dollars. It dumped a puddle of primer out in the middle of hood. What a mess. The parts don't interchange with other cheap guns either. Northern tools has excellent one for around 50-60 . Lot better quality.

Get a good gun, keep it clean and sell it on ebay for 2/3rds to 3/4's of what you paid for it when you are finished. Or maybe you'll catch "the bug" and keep it to do another project.
The pain of the purchase lasts only for a short time. The pain of using something that is junk lasts the whole way through the project.

I have to disagree? I find the HF guns a very good value. Now it's not a high end gun like my SATA 2000NR but it's cheap enough to learn on. Especially shooting primer.

Not bad to learn with, but I have to ask what do they think people are spray out of them that they would pack the gun full of an oily wax paste?

So they don't rust on the way over. ;)
I don't know 'what' you get Today from HF. Back almost 20 years ago when I got my Purple gun, full and mini, they were carbon copies of Satas. Later when I got my Sata minijet3,I broke the mini Purple and 3 down and compared the two. Practically identical except for the number of airhorn holes with 2 per side on the 3.
Not Everyone has Deep Pockets, I was one and like learning Guitar, had a knockoff Strat and Champ amp to learn with.
Having the Best 'anything doesn't make you Good if you have no idea what your doing.
Time and Experience does That.

My first gun was a purple hf.

Yeah,They were 'quite the Sh!t Storm' back in the early 2000's. More discussions on Hotrodders than you could remember about them.
Me and Badbob(Bob H)got our Lph-400's at the same time and we're constantly conversing about settings, pressures, caps, etc about what was working or not. Fun time with a Game changing gun. Really pissed the Sata hardliners off big time. Still does. LOL....
