I have read to never use lacquer thinner to clean a surface that is to be painted or primed. My question is is it OK to clean the spray gun with lacquer thinner or will this cause a contamination problem. Assuming the lacquer thinner is dried/ evaporated from the gun.

RE: using Lacquer thinner to clean a surface to be painted, many people will use it as a pre-clean prior to painting, but it flashes much too quick to insure all the impurities have been floated to the surface.. Hence the W&G removers are much slower at evaporation. For cleaning the paint gun you should be fine, most paint gun cleaners use a strong thinner..
 
Like MP said it will work fine cleaning the paint gun.
Also a note if you ever need to clean a metal item with lacquer thinner for what ever reason that would be, you can correct the problem by just going over the area with any wax and grease remover.

You all cleared it up. I thought that when using lacquer thinner it was causing contamination rather than it just wasn't capable of cleaning properly.

real lacquer thinner is expensive . that recycled crap they sell for 5 - 6 bucks a gal is junk solvents recycled. there is nothing on a piece of steel that soap and water and solvent wax and grease remover wont cut.

Yes Shine your right the last I bought was 18.00 a gal. Yes I have been using the W&G remover from SPI and will continue to. My concern was if the lacquer was contaminating the surface to be painted, I didn't know that it was just not capable of doing a good job because of the fast evaporation rate. Which led me to my original question of could I use it to clean my gun because if it was a contamination problem it was causing I certainly didn't want it in my gun but I understand now so I will keep cleaning my gun with it because at 18.00 a gal its still cheaper than the reducers. I am the one that sent you a PM about separating the gal of color into quarts thanks for setting me straight on that. I am an old person but new to paint spraying which explains all the stupid questions.
