Interesting video on Filler over Epoxy vs Bare Metal, Opinions?

After much thought I'll offer my opinion.
Some of the questions he asks any person trying to learn would ask if they are wanting to do the best longest lasting paint job they can.
If the epoxy is the same brand as the body filler then I can understand it. Years ago I used that brand of epoxy but was always looking for something better. If memory is correct it was a little difficult to sand and sprayed grainy. Then I found SPI epoxy and have not used anything but SPI since.
When in the late 80s and early 90s one of the majors came out with their epoxy, one of the selling points was that you can put filler over it.
That was 30 YEARS AGO.
Then the fad hit where everyone was doing body color on anything chrome. Bumpers, door handles etc. They were using this new on the market epoxy as a primer on the Chrome. So epoxy before filler has been around for a long time. Nothing new. SPI epoxy is the only primer I use. Nothing better. I do mainly older stuff and ALWAYS put epoxy on properly prepared bare metal first. Period. Never had an issue with it.
I hope I've covered everything.

You just showed your age!!
What made epoxy get the big push was in 79
Or so Mercedes asked glasurit and
Herberts to come up with something their dealers could put under body filler to prevent rusting IF Mercedes was paying for the job

Glaseriut came up with epoxy and is required by Mercedes if they are paying for the job.
This was before BASF bought glasurit.
Herberts was Spies and Standox before Dupont bought them.

Here are some companies that now require epoxy under filler IF they are paying.
Toyota, Mercedes, VW, Porsche Land Rover
May be more as not kept up.

I saw this video about a week ago. I left a comment saying the huge variable in the equation was the epoxy. No info on cure times, etc. I appreciate his videos. I've learned. YouTube isn't always a bad thing. There's a bunch of bad info out there. But some channels that have over 100k subs. Put out good info and make a surprisingly good income from it.

Stop watching YouTube videos and start reading threads here on the Forum:rolleyes:
First that test is not a proper comparison to applying filler over metal or epoxy on the panel of a vehicle. Second what type of epoxy primer? Not all epoxy primers are the same. If applying filler over bare metal was better do you think every OEM Manufacturer would require filler applied over epoxy to maintain the corrosion warranty?
If you want to watch a video go to YouTube and search "epoxy torture test".
When you apply filler over bare metal, what happens is the metal condensates because of the heat from the catalytic reaction that occurs when filler hardens. Then if it sits for any length of time bare or even with urethane primer over, it absorbs moisture from the air(humidity). Even in Socal.
Chris I bet if you made a channel it would take off. You are very knowledgeable with lots of real world experience. I bet u could make 500 a month extra income by getting paid to share it!

As much as he knows there would be detractors. I have learned a lot not only from Chris but from this forum . This is actually the only paint forum I am a member of.

LMFAO!!! I have watched some of his videos, mainly out of some type of fixation to punish myself, but going off of his previous videos I would put in the in the "Used Car" category.... He has his own skills, but he is a "Now now now" kind of guy so I wouldn't look to him for too much advise.

Sunday night I took time to read almost all of the comments that people who watched the video posted. While I disagree with his position on the subject that got this thing started , he did take time to answer people who asked questions or he disagreed with. Three people asked what brand primer and he provided links to it. Same brand as body filler and also same brand I used about ten or so years ago. I quit using it because I found something better suited to what I wanted to accomplish. He is definitely convinced that since filler was created to be put over bare metal, that is what he will do regardless. Now since time has passed since it's rollout and we've learned about its downside, why not look for a solution to the problems that have come along since we all have seen rust under filler placed on bare metal. Like Barry said in an earlier post, epoxy was created to prevent rust under filler on vehicles that the factory was paying to have repaired. So I will continue to place epoxy on properly prepared bare metal on all of my work. I use SPI epoxy because I have learned it can be trusted to do the job. Why take a chance on having a redo later on? Do it right and not worry about it later on.

you tube is for making money. the more crap they put out there the more hits they get . i was approached back when i was doing the 57 corvette by some media types wanting to film it and stuff . they drove me bat shit crazy for months . just didn't have time for it then as i had 3 going at once .

The problem in YouTube videos like this is that the watcher must be educated enough in the area to come to their own conclusions. I’ve seen some when you say there’s no way I’m doing that and others I’ve picked up some pretty good tips.

Seems to me that the epoxy split down the middle adhered to both equally.

Adhesion and flexibility are crucial, and also, airtight, 2k primer, base nor clear is airtight.
If none of this mattered, the restro shop would all use 2 k primer over bare metal as long as a dtm.
All 3 of my 2ks are dtm, but I only talk that to insurance shops, never a restro shop.

I bought a used and abused 25 ton tilt bed semi trailer around 1990. Got it for about nothing, and we totally rebuilt it in our shop. Once all the repair work and welding was done, we sandblasted it and primed it with S-W Tile Clad industrial epoxy, and painted it with S-W industrial enamel. 30+ years later, there's not one spec of rust or any lifting paint anywhere on the trailer save a few places on the deck where the grousers on tracked machines have peeled the paint to bare metal when they slipped while loading.

That one job made a believer of me about the value of epoxy as the first thing to put on bare metal.

I saw a recent episode where they restarted a project that sat in primer for several years. They found rust under the filler applied to bare metal. Was surprised how bad it looked.

Don
That episode was on the other night. Back from the dead was title of it. It was towards the end of the show before they started digging into it.
BTW that show is about the only one I will watch beside graveyard carz. It is organized and put together very professional. That episode was the first of two on the rebuild. In my opinion they build very nice vehicles.
