How do you thicken basecoat?

I thought striping paint was enamel. Guess I leaned something. So they call it urethane, but it takes no hardener, and is compatible with basecoat?

hok can take a hardner and has a uv clear to mix for going on top of clear like one shot. personally i dont like messing with iso's all the time and one shot is much easier to stripe with and pull a long line compared to urethane. not to mention there colors cover. hok and some other urethane striping paint covers like SHIT.

its pretty basic shit with this stuff. to me and jim its a no brainer. for the guys asking questions about mixing and so forth.. tells me that u should probably contact your local guru striper. nothing like blowing up a customers job or having to fix a wrinkled clear job..... and dont think ur safe with a urethane. if u get the clear runny enuff, u can take the pinstripe with it. custom paint is no joke and is ALOT diff. then collision.. im at home when custom is envolved... throw me in a crash shop... and i dont feel comfortable. end rant.

Yeah, I was treating this at face value, "how do you thicken base coat." But obviously there is a lot more involved when it comes to dedicated stripe paint.

I don't see anything wrong with the OP learning and pushing the limits of his own knowledge, though.

That said, I should not have missed a good opportunity to stay silent on this one, since I had only wrong information to offer. Sorry, everyone.

Seen your name mentioned in this months Auto Art magazine at Kongs Toilet Seat panel jam. There is a complete picture of the group, I see you if you are the one in the backrow with the mile high mohawk! They also mention Outlaw there as well! Now that you mention the hardener in the One-shot I just remembered I did do a test panel using one-shot and SPI activator that I use with the SPI Universal clear and it worked just fine! Its been a year ago, just cant remember sometimes! LOL!

lol i didnt even know they had that in an article thanks for letting me know. r u on kkl? and that was a bad hair day for my mohawk... it was fucked up. lol. but that was a fun day. good times.

fuck it had to post it... airbrushing at a bike show..

Agree, I get calls everyday on custom painting and I'm the first to say, don't have a clue, get on forum, If I hear someone repeated enough like blue candy bleed from Jim, I will repeat but other then that, I get real confused real fast. My idea of custom is spray clear, wet sand and three more coats. LOL.

Sik, 710 wax and grease remover will help that hair deal. LOL

i haven't seen auto art magazine in 3-4 years. i used to subscribe but i thought it went under? sik, your gonna hurt someone with that hair. i have gone completely the other direction. i seem to get less and less every year. not sure if its from owning my own business or being married.

barry its not uncommon for that. i just went straight for custom. ive had my fair share of one color completes and blends and spot jobs. but i barely know how to use a mixing bank. i dont know how to color match.. i know alot of the little tricks and stuff for speed and what not.. but just never get to apply to that line of work. bleeding, edges, crossing products, back taping, pushing windows and coats, effect products that require out of the ordinary steps, thats were i feel at home.

jim c. u know as well as i do having an image for custom paint is almost a must. i seem to get alot more interest with it then without it.. ill rock it while i still have it.

Ive been a subsciber for 3-4 years! Do you think that you might be thinking about Autographics magazine? Auto Art Magazine is the one put out by Bob Bond. I really think that Auto Art is probably the best magazine out there paint/art.

sik

Ya Im on KKL as phattail. I dont post much if any but I do go there frequently.

no, i used to get autographics too but they turned into a wrap mag. well thats good to know auto art is still out there. the one i really liked was ab mag which was done by mike learn but i dont think he is doing that anymore either. that was full cover to cover with really true useful info for artists and painters. i cant stand airbrush action. 90% of it is just advertisments and useless info. its not like it used to be.

I liked Mike Learns magazine as well, in fact I think Ive probably still got a subscription to it! Been waiting for a couple if not 3-4 years! LOL! Been talk that someone would buy it and continue printing but that has been awhile, maybe 2-3 years. Right there with you on airbrush action. I use to subscribe but not anymore. I just go down to the bookstore and read it, if I like what I see Ill buy.

LOL!! what do you read??? the projector buyer guide or how to paint a heart on a golfclub?? oh no wait, it must be how to spray paint through yet another stencil. ok, maybe i am being too harsh, i'll stop now!!

i heard some rumors at sema about a big shot in the industry starting a new mag.. could be just a rumor..:) but u wouldnt know that jim... u were at sema with only bizness in mind! what custom painter goes to sema to do buisness?party.. drink(wierd that i dont) party some more... passout....miss most of the day at sema... and start it all over again...

You may be a "dud" but you taught this old man A LOT about custom work,And,I THANK YOU.
Learns got ALL into his web site and "live web" gigs.I still get invites back to them via e-mail but don't have the connect speed for all this vid stuff.Besides,I about lost my "chop's" due to my real job and painting has almost been a wishfull dream anymore.
I left KKL due to all the B.S. It's still a good knowledge base for stuff but I barely have time to surf much less learn anymore.
Hopefully all my AB's will forgive me and my kandys will still be solvent when I get back into this again. And yeah Jim,I still have the Majestic KK21's

ha ha!! me too. i have one or two unopened bottles of it. i really dont know what i am saving it for. i have a mix of 2 blues in the carizzma line that gives almost that same intense color. i have never really been to kkl. i'm a keep to myself kinda guy and dont really care too much about whats going on out there. i just do my own thing. if people like it so be it. this is really the only online forum i goto other than i pop in occasionally on refinish network. even here though i have been alot quieter lately. just dont have time to read and answer posts all the time.

what was the bs?

This is like reading a magazine in French, none of this is making any sense as to what you guys are talking about.
However I did understand the stencil part, so all hope of me being a custom painter is not totally out the window yet.
I could use a stencil!

old dogs can learn new trickery

I'm proof of that.I didn't pick up a paint gun until 2001 at the ripe old age of 44 then I picked up an AB after going to one of Craig's seminars at a local vo-tech put on by my local jobber and then the Kos came thru and what a treat. That old man was a hoot and I waited till everybody had their "meet & greet" afterward and had a one on one conversation about real custom painting and how I was just totally in to it as I never could get into general paint work, had no interest what so ever but this whole custom, bend, break,no,rules gig was right up my alley.I learned as much as possible from people like Jim,OutlawC (keith) as well as Craig and some others on different boards and got "dirty".It was a LOT of trial & error, still is,but I was completely consumed with it.Then real life slaps you in the face and I have a family, mortgage, job to respect,so,it's been put in the closet for the time being,BUT,all is changing and I will get back to it.I was a semi pro musician since I was 16 and I thought nothing would ever come between me and a guitar, then one day I picked up a paint gun and the guitars were put in the closet.People who knew me from back in the day are completely dumbfounded that I had quit playing,I found a new gig and the only arguing is with myself now.LOL....
As for KKL,There got to be a few "experts" who really degraded people,A "click" of sorts among the board as well as "procedures" that IMO were wrong as well as being almost completely HOK oriented.HOK ain't "all that" and as of late, has really gone to shit.I find SPI far superior and when IT was mentioned, was treated as a "cheap" line of products or completely ignored and I just got fed up with their attitude.I tried my best to get Craig hooked up with Barry and just "try" some SPI but he was just so chained to his "sponsors" that it was not going to happen. He say's he's all about trying new stuff but thats a complete load of B.S. He knows who pays his bill's and thats where he's staying.
Maybe things have changed as of late but I have "other" things to do as my time is limited.I know other more friendly painters who are as good or better and like Jim,kinda like doing my own thing.
