Help a new guy not screw up spraying SPI Epoxy!

P

paine

First let me say that this is an invaluable resource for a new/infrequent painter like myself! Thanks !

I called SPI and ordered both one gallon of Epoxy and activator, being new to this I asked the helpful SPI representative if I needed anything else, he said I should be good for what I am doing and gave me a quick rundown on the product and recommended I read the tech sheet. I did read the tech sheet and that was also very informative!

The vehicle is a 2000 Super Duty with a few miles on it, I went south to buy it used a few years ago because you cannot find more then 3-4 year old vehicle in Michigan that isn't almost too far gone. I had it undercoated when I first got it in MI and I'm sure it helped since it was the non-drying grease/wax type undercoat, but now its due for some touch-up as I found a pin hole water spot in the paint right above the right rear wheel well. Around here most F250's of this are are just missing this area of the bed and much more so I knew what it would look like in a year or so if i just ignored it. I already attacked the door pinch welds last season as they were getting a little nasty but I fell for the POR15 bull and used in on the pinch of the doors after I opened up the pinch and media blasted the area and closed it back up. I am planning on blasting that crap off and spraying epoxy on.

The truck bed is flipped over and I removed the crap engineered inner fenders on the ford bed that are spot welded in with water holding foam which is the cause of the rot in the areas. I have been media blasting with the Black Diamond media which works well. I found a good deal on a small refrigerated dryer and it has helped with the blasting process and I'm sure will be good for the paint. I removed all the bed supports and I am going to spray epoxy, weld in new supports, spot blast the welds a spray again as per the info in this forum.

A few questions:
1- Should I mix 1:1 epoxy/activator? I do not plan on top coating this, I will be spraying the underside of the bed and the frame.
2- will I be ok with my newer Sharpie Razor gun with a 1.7mm tip or should I order the 1.5mm now and hope it gets here before the clean metal starts to surface rust?
3-How many coats should I use? 3? I do not plan on using this truck in the winter months anymore!!
4-I am sure I will think of more but is Lunch is over.

thanks in advance for any input!!

YES mix 1:1

YES that will fork fine, fluid should be turned out 2 turns, with an 80% wide open fan.

3-How many coats should I use? 3? I do not plan on using this truck in the winter months anymore!!

Anything over 2 is a bonus and never a waist for protection.

4-I am sure I will think of more but I Lunch is over.

We had deer burgers today.

Thanks for the info!
Another... Can I pick up a good waterborne cleaner at Napa or similar. I don't want to wait on shipping or I would just order from SPI!

you are planning to reinstall the outer wheelhouses though right? With adhesive?

When I first sprayed epoxy....it was my first time painting. I forgot to let it induce for 30 minutes and I shook the can instead of stirring it. I had to remove all of it.

Check temperature of epoxy........Mix it.....stir it.....let it sit 30 minutes.....stir it again.....check the temp of metal with a temperature gun.
Don't skip a step......70°

Mix it.....stir it.....let it sit 30 minutes.....stir it again.....check the temp of metal with a temperature gun. AND THEN READY TO PAINT?

I am going to try and spray today since it is going to be a high of 75°F

Yes.....then ready to spray epoxy primer. Always strain it as well. I had some contamination from a wooden paint stick......switched to plastic and clean it when I clean the gun.
With75° you will be good......but I will say. Just because the temperature is one thing doesn't mean the metal temperature is the same.

My shop was 70° I turned it up to 80°. I checked the temperature of the metal when the shop was 70°......one side of the car was 73° where the heater was hitting it.
The other side toward the ground was 60°.......that's why I turned it up. At 80° I finally got the temp up at that part of the car to the 70s......Epoxy likes warm......

If the shop was 65° that spot would have been in the low 50s and would have been out of specifications.

Thanks for all the help guys, I sprayed the bottom of the truck bed already and I am about to spray the frame (cab back). Since I am going to be spraying again is it a good idea to give truck bed another coat? Can I spray the epoxy over the 2 week old spray? thanks.
