Gas welding

I can’t imagine how I could hand form this even if I wanted to. I know my limitations in time and talent… :). The patch panel cost $40…

Yeah, that’s a fair bit of work compared to $40. I wonder if heating the welding edge, then hammering it flat, may resolve some impurities? Just a thought, I’ve never tried it.
I’ll bet MP&C could whip that out pretty quick.

Peter shows how to block out something like that and finish with hammer and dolly. I've done a couple of pieces that way after watching the vid (many times). It surprisingly easy to do when you see the correct technique demonstrated. Not advocating it in Don's case but it can be done.

When you can get a patch panel that is the way to go. With your patch above you could form it by hand but it would take some time (not as much as you think though) and experience.
Whenever I hand shape something I can't help thinking how panels are pressed in seconds on giant die press machines and it takes hours and hours to move it by hand.
Like Chris mentioned above an understanding of the fundamentals is required. It can be done with simple hand tools. Expensive equipment or machines are "tools" that just help to speed up the process.

I think that was in one of the first couple of videos that he showed making a fender bottom patch.

I’m getting old and the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze for me… :)
I get it ;). With less time left I have to be selective and prefer the shorter projects. When you are young you think you have forever.
If you were ever a member of the procrastinator's society this realization comes at a later date.
As a side note the "Procrastinators Society" had a emergency meeting last week but they put it off for a later undetermined date.

Every time I say I’m old, my wife tells me it’s a state of mind. There’s lots of longevity in my family, so I have to weigh my bets on how long I have. The time will pass, even if you don’t seize the time now.
Still, I get it, shaping panels is hard work.

I’ve got a lot of stuff on my plate. :)
