Epoxy reducer

I plan on spraying some black SPI epoxy primer this weekend. Since I'm looking for a nice semi-gloss finish, I plan on adding about 20 percent reducer to the final coat. But, I have two quick questions. I plan on spraying the the initial coat of epoxy to bare metal full strength with no reducer; wait 6 hours and put the second coat with the reducer added. I'm assuming I can spray the second reduced coat over the initial coat without a problem? The second question; I have a small a amount of fast reducer left over from a previous project that I needed to use to get Auto Body Master epoxy to flow even. Can I use this reducer with SPI?

yup and maybe. Reducer quality varies greatly, no idea what Auto Body Master is like. If you want semi-gloss you'll need slow reducer, the faster the ruducer is the less gloss you'll have IMO. SPI reducer is some really top notch solvent.

The AB reducer will cut the gloss, reducer will only help if a small amount is added and it is of high grade and one range hotter then the temp calls for.
Like Bob said, slow at a rate of 5-10% max or just shoot unreduced and wet coat coats.

2 wet coats unreduced and then a third coat 5% reduction with the slow reducer.that will give you the nice semi-gloss finish your looking for and max protection ya want.have done this in wheel wells and undercarriage parts and works great.but I tend to be real anal bout my finishes, and 3 coats of barrys epoxy is damn near bullet proof.

Thanks for the replies!! I was planning on painting the bottom of my truck cab and some suspension parts this past weekend, but it was -30 below zero in Minnesota and was tough to keep my garage over 70 degrees without having the furnace run non-stop. I'll go buy some of the SPI reducer as long as I have some time now until it warms up a bit. It sounds like 885-1 slow reducer is what I need at 5-10%. I epoxy primed a few under dash parts before the cold snap hit last week and they turned out very glossy. On those parts I sprayed the epoxy unreduced with 3 coats, only allowing the coats to flash about 15 minutes in between. In the future I'll do two coats of unreduced; wait several hours and spray the last coat with 15-20% reduced and hopefully get the semi-gloss appearance........THANKS!
