A letter to refinish products users:

One large shop around here that I know switched to PPG, the painter said it was due to costs, Dupont was too high and they lost quoted jobs.
 
Too bad the logo is going away. I started with Dupont products back around 1971 and used it right up to about a year or so ago.
Since I started using SPI all I would use was base or single stage, one old repeat customer I still use Centari for a stripe on thier van fleet. When that runs out I'll switch to single stage urethane, some other brand likely SW.
Makes the old sign extra nostalgic.

That's funny because ppg is more expensive than dupont

What do you base that statement on?
You don't know the particulars regarding that shop's paint suppliers or the volume that shop uses which is roughly ten times the volume of an average 2-3 man body shop.
Price structure gets better with volume and some suppliers are more competitive that others.
 
I have heard over the last 15 years that if you take user price of any major company and figure out spray-able ounce of any product (the good products, not their lower lines) that everyone of the majors will be within 1% of spray-able cost.
Don't know if true but have been told that by a lot of reps over the years.
Now this does not mean DBU is same as spies as the Spies is a premium grade, like the global.
 
Omni is out. Shopline is their economy line go to now. My PPG platinum dealer informed me awhile back. Just sayin...

How they have worked this before, is you had to be a Platinum jobber to get the Shopline, if you were not, then you could only have Omni.
No need for a jobber to have both but I'm sure they are not killing the omni line, just your jobber has.
 
I just spayed my car using Dupont base and it took four coats to cover and 5 coats of white for the stripes.
 
But if you complain about watered down coverage problems you'll be told to use the appropriate value shade sealer first. It's amazing how well all the colors covered when Chroma-base first came out, was there this great idea? less pigment=more paint sales + we can sell the value shade system-win/win!
 
I also wonder if the guy mixing it has anything to do with how thinned out it is. the car I put the stripes on is a 69 Camaro. I used a pint of white to do all the stripes. well, I messed up the hood (first time I’ve done stripes) and i had to repaint it. I used every bit of the pint so i had to buy more. a different guy mixed it and i actually paid for 3/4 of a quart just to have extra. I used almost all of it to cover the hood! how is that???
 
I shot the whole car La Mans Blue and then striped it. I think i'll try PPG next time. Unless i get my 65 vett ready first, that will be SPI Black.
 
When comparing paint cost/vs. quality and coverage also watch mixing ratios-some brands call for only a 50% reduction so in all reality you're just buying less paint. Whites usually cover well in the premium lines from what I've seen. I have had some whites not cover well with brands that also regularly have coverage problems with other colors. It's just like house paint, there's no deal if you have to buy three times as much product to get the job done.
 
I really like Glasurite paint for coverage. I can shoot 2 coats of single stage white (stripes on a red Finished photos 66 Mustang (4).jpg

Shelby) and can colorsand and buff it after and it is FULL coverage. It may cost more per quart, but you use much less to get the job done.
