Dawn soap and water wash before wax and grease remover ok?

I'm going to wash my project today before I use wax and grease remover. Is dawn and water a suitable wash pre w&g remover? Thanks!

it takes very little dawn soap. i like it because it disperses oils . my first use of it was on a vette years ago . hood and fender were badly contaminated with blow by oil . figured it was worth a try and it worked well . it kept my hands clean doing the dishes , it would remove all the paint from work .

I have searched the SPI site for all "Dawn" related posts and have yet to find one that outlines the mixing ratio when using it to clean bare metal before using W&G. I have 700 and 710 but want to clean the metal as much as possible before using the SPI products. What mix ratio should I use?
I also have ZEP Purple. Should I use that instead, alongside Dawn, or not as a pre-cleaner?

Cheers,
Emil

I found a reference online that suggests 1 Tsp/ 2 Cups of warm water or about 20:1. That equates to about 7 Oz./Gal. That seems a little higher than 2 squirts. I'll follow your recommendation to start and go from there if things still look unclean.

Thanks for the quick reply,
Emil

I don’t see how bare metal would need seven ounces of Dawn per gallon of water. That’s a huge amount of soap…. You would have a heck of a time rinsing that off imo…
I agree, which is why I'm listening to you instead of the Ninnernet.

You need enough to Dawn to get:

@AAE:
You'll have to forgive me but my eyesight is not acute enough to make out what you are trying to tell me with those pictures. Please elaborate.

And no, unfortunately, I am not trying to be funny.

EDIT: Never mind, I got my daughter to decipher them and explain them to me. Point taken, and thanks to you both.

Yup, I get it now. Thank you all for setting me stright and talking me down from the tree.
The post I found said 1 Tsp in 2 Cups of water. My broken math led me to extrapolate that to 6.45 Oz./Gal. I'm not evenn sure how I arrived that conclusion.
The broken math part is that it all actually works out to 8 Tsp/Gal rather than 7 Oz/Gal. ( I think  ) Less "foam on th runway" and more "sudsy sink".

I don't think I have ever measured soap before. Squirt some in the bucket, fill with hot scolding water simply because I wasn't paying attention and probably distracted by the dog......and move on to cleaning.

As usual common sense prevails. To much soap is going to leave a soap residue if the panel is not washed off and "scrubbed" with water. Just hosing off a panel with that much soap is not going to remove all the soap, it will leave a residue causing issues later. I had read an article and the author outlined using one teaspoon of dish washing soap per cup of water. The author highly stressed that using more than the recommended ratio of soap to water would leave a soap residue on those area that are not scrubbed with water.
