Clearcoat solids question.

Hey painters,

I usually use a high-solids clear, specifically SPI Universal Clear. However, we recently bought out another painter who was closing his shop. In his paint stash was some Shopline medium-solids and low-solids clear. My question is, if I spray several coats of low or medium-solids clear, will it build up the solids content to the point that it's like using a high-solids clear? That would not be just laying it all on at one time, but rather coating, then wet-sanding the next day and recoating, then again. Any ideas?

Thanks.

This is tough to answer and the answer is yes and no but more yes!?
A lot of the cheap end clears use a filler to make them look thicker and a common call I get is I have been using this low grade clear and got your universal and the low grade is higher solids.
Fillers go away and that is why solid hockey pucks tells the truth.

With most low end clears ( the better ones only) two coats of Universal equals 3-3.5 coats of theirs, spot repairs the universal could be a 3:1 ratio.

No exact answer but you get the idea.

Of course the other problem is the MSDS does not always tell the real story.
