Clausen Sandy Polyester Primer

So I called Clausen to see if you can buy their Sandy polyester primer in less than 4 gallon increments. It turns out that if you call the order in, you only need to be over $100. So I ordered 2 gallons of the Sandy ($107/gallon) to use as my last coats to block sand. In talking with the guy, I described what I was doing by sandblasting and using Epoxy over the bare steel. The guy insisted that epoxy is not waterproof, only water resistant. Now he may have been trying to push the other polyester primers they have as he said those can be applied to bare steel and are waterproof and that no other product needed to be used until final paint. From my understanding, the Sandy is also waterproof, has no recoat windows but cannot be applied to bare steel, unlike their other 2 polyester primers. Since I have epoxy on the bare steel, I went with the Sandy. I want to here feedback on what this guy was saying.

this guy is full of $hit. epoxy is the ONLY paint/primer that is actually waterproof. this is why its used in pools, boat bottoms, etc as both a sealer and laminating resin. polyester is not 100% waterproof long term. not saying you would ever notice on a car because it takes a very long time for it to penetrate but technically it does. for instance a boat that is going to sit in the water full time, if its laminated with polyester below the water line then the bottom needs to be sealed with epoxy barrier coat to avoid osmotic blistering. most better boats, the bottom will be laminated with vinyl ester which doesnt suffer from this.

poly primer is essential sprayable finishing glaze/putty. a really thinned down body filler. it would be just as water proof as spraying a skim coat of body filler with the water hose. which is actually not water proof....i wouldnt say its waterproof. like don said, he has no interest in talking about a product he doesnt sell. i actually have been thinking about doing a test run of poly primer over bare steel and leave it outside for a year and see what happens under it...

I am always on the lookout for a cheaper poly primer. I am still using superbuild and the best price I have found on it is autobodytoolmart. sadly the shipping conditions are sub par... Now that I know you can order clausens without the limit of 4 I may try that my next go around.

Clausens makes some bodyfillers that appear to be really priced good. I have been very curious about those as well.

so its been years since i used polyprimer so just for giggles i looked up the featherfill g2 that i used to use. good god. $150-200 a gallon now. wow. that stuff used to be 60-75 bucks a gallon.

i like super build also. but i got the last round of featherfill for like 90 a gallon. it was on ebay from autobodytool mart. arrived beat up , but still sprayed the same.

i had a gallon of superbuild in the closet in the house for about a year and a half. thinking it would still be good. i went to open it and the entire thing was just jelly.

Had problems with the Optex. Started telling them to give me fresh batch dates. One year it would lock up
