Block Sanding Epoxy Primer

H

Hello all,

This is my first paint job so I'm still trying to figure things out. This is what I currently have on the car:

1. 2 coats of Kirker Epoxy

2. 3 Coats of Slick Sand - Blocked out with 80 Grit

3. 3 Coats of SPI Epoxy - Very nice in contrast to Kirker!!!

My questions is what should I do next? The 80 grit scratches are obviously still visible. Should I:

a) Block the Epoxy 180, 320, 400, 600 Wet. I'd like to do the least amount of blocking as possible so please make any recommondations.

b)Shoot 2k High Build and block that out before shooting more Epoxy.

Thanks for your help!

100 ways you can do this but because of all the different things you have on the car now, I vote for block the epoxy with 180 to get rid of the 80 grit and seal and paint.

I tried to dry block today with 180 but the paper kept clogging. Should I start wet sanding? Could it be the primer that I used for a guide coat (Rustoleum)? Is jumping from 80 to 180 too much?

You can go by the gloss of the epoxy primer at this stage. Depending how heavy you put on that rustolium, that could be your problem. 80 to 180 is not that big of a jump, but your epoxy might not be cured enough just yet. You said you sprayed 3 coats...that may take a few days until its sandable. If possible, put it outside in the sun for a day.

I guidecoat each panel atleast for my final sanding of 320 so I don't miss any scratches. You can see them without, but they are a lot easier to miss. I use a different color of epoxy for guidecoat - no forign materials means no possiblility of contamination. Just my opinion.

I always use the powder guide coat. Seems to work well for me. Everyone has their own preference I guess.

True,

I only let it dry for 24 hours. I'll give it a bit more time! Thanks all.

I do the same as Form406... But usually takes a couple of days to cure depending on the temp.

It did need to cure longer. I just finished blocking with 180. I think im going to spray 2 coats of 1:1:1. Block that with 600. Spray one more coat of 1:1:1 before base and clear. Everything is pretty straight at this point.

i wouldnt reduce if your going to block more, unless you want it to dry faster, but the coats are thinner.

so. would you guys go with 1 0r 2 coats? i was thinking one unthinned. my initial thought about shooting 2 thinned was that the 600 would not knock much off. i have a bunch of metal/old paint areas showing through.

3 Coats of Slick Sand - Blocked out with 80 Grit

3 Coats SPI Epoxy - Blocked 180

All Shot with 1.8 Tip!

If you think your "ready for paint" then I would shoot 1 coat of unreduced epoxy and let it set 24 hours minimum. Next day wet sand with 600 using a soft block, rinse, blow off with compressed air, wipe with W&G remover then wait at least 30 minutes. Run a tack cloth over it and spray your base coat.
