Base coat paint

Is there any base that works better or worse with SPI clear? I haven’t painted a car in quite a few years, so I know some things may have changed. I have always used PPG paint. I am now using SPI primer and I’ll probabl use SPI clear. I have found a metallic Grey that I like. I priced it in PPG base. It’s $700.00 a gallon for just the paint. No hardener or reducer. Is that the going price for paint nowadays? Does PPG work well with SPI?

I have used PPG DBC with SPI. You can use SPI reducer and activator instead of PPG and save some money.

I have used a number of different base coats with SPI primers and clears with no issues whatsoever.
I suggest you consider sending the paint code to Chad Sperry for a quote in Motobase LV. It is a good quality paint and considerably less expensive than PPG.

I don't have nearly as much experience as many frequent posters here, but I've used Wanda base on three cars with great results. I just bought two gallons of Wanda True Blue metallic at $287/gallon from my local jobber. I've used SPI primers and clear with the Wanda base.

I have used the Wanda as well. No issues other than it mixes 2:1 so you have to buy more of it. Motobase LV mixes 1:1.

Good advice here, EVERYONE of the bases listed are as good in quality as the Deltron or better.

Barry, I just wanted to let you know that I am amazed at how well the SPI Dark Red base covers.
And when I need something black, the Black Black base is my number one choice after seeing how it transformed my Harley Ultra Classic.

Dark red is harder to get coverage compare to say the SPI red or more medium reds as far as formulating I would like better but did the best I can.

I shot a complete with MotoBase last night. Really impressed with it honestly. Price per gallon was almost half of what I would have paid for the color in Chromabase and I dont even want to get into what I would have paid for this color in Deltron.

2 coat coverage, but i did 3. i checked it all with a Sungun after 2 and it was good. Im just used to doing 3.

I have to do some small graphics tonight, so we shall see how it likes being taped on!

Looks great. I have sprayed a couple of completes with it now and find it to be a quality paint at a reasonable price. The last one was a tri-stage paint: Suburu Spruce Pearl that I sprayed on a '55 chevy truck.

Me too! I order everything online and although it takes a couple of days to get here, the price and quality beat anything local.

4 coats of UV clear last night. I think i got my groove back. For the longest time I have been battling runs with this stuff. start knocking it down tonight for a nice buff. First big job in my new garage. I have to make some adjustments on the intake air fans, mainly the ductwork. Got some trash in areas that I know there are air leaks. Overall im happy with it.

and no that isnt my paint mask in the last pic, lol
