What was it mixed in? Normal, Medium, or High Solids?

It wouldn't be High Solids.. We have been mixing a lot more colors in Medium lately and will most likely start mixing most colors in medium in the future. We had a LOT of issues with the High solids so trying to stay away from that but it seems like years ago they changed up their binder to toner ratios in the different solids and we noticed it and started mixing more in medium on the harder covering colors..

With really dark colors or colors that are high coverage we still mix in normal solids. I feel that with a color like black which is slow drying and high coverage their is no reason to load it up with pigment and slow down the flash times.. you can nearly get coverage with one coat in normal solids so it's a pretty efficient color.

I bet with him having a coverage issues he has normal solids and we just have to strengthen it up for him and he would be good to go.

2 gallons

Ok, let us check it out tomorrow.

I've been spraying everything lately in high solids. I'll do medium if I know it is a good hiding color like the blacks and silvers. I haven't seen any issues

Just did a 71 challenger in viper blue PBC. That formula has the 1010 viola fantasy pearl in it. They had to order enough from 3 different states so I would have enough..lol. Took 13 of the 150ml cans. About 40% of it is that pearl...even in high solids it still took 4 coats for coverage. I sprayed it over a black sealer. Matches the color swatch dead on. I couldn't imagine that color in normal or medium solids. Maybe they have fixed the issue with the high solids? IDK...just passing along the info.

Some colors out there just suck...and have to deal with it...but if you only have to put maybe 2 more coats on for coverage over another system like sikkens then that is expected. BUT I have been very pleased with the pro spray system for what I do. If they had a few more tools in their arsenal they could easily compete with the big boys on a larger scale.

When we were mixing the base in high solids we were having horrible color match, and about half of the people using it had it wrinkle on them.. One guy had a whole car wrinkle. Went to normal solids and no issues since.

I don't know if fixed or not, but i've been to scared to try high solids.. but i think coverage in medium is really good. That car looks great btw.

I put the boss in charge of this, should have some info shortly. :encouragement:

I am going to mix up some toners to give it more pigment. Do you still have pretty much 2 gallons? Just so I know how much to send.

Ok, so I'll be sending you two cans. One for each gallon, so you'll want to even it out a little. That should help up the solids to give you better coverage.

Here is a video explaining a few things. These are some of the things taught in refinish schools today. So...doing a sprayout over black and white checkered cards can sometimes be misleading. Yes you will achieve 100% full coverage that way but a lot of colors out there aren't designed for that. Just something to keep in mind.

He says "perceived hiding" a lot of times. This is what I am calling the illusion of full coverage. The interesting thing about this method is that it tends to create a lighter flop than can sometimes be achieved with normal tinting.

Great video.

2:1 red oxide and black gives me a good sealer color. Matches the base and gives better coverage.

I ended up using grey as a sealer. Using the darker color sealer helped with coverage but the color cards were coming out inconsistent, from spraying a dark sealer over light grey.

Thanks Chad for the toners.
Saved me at least one coat.

This is what I'm talking about with inconsistent color with even the same color sealer. top left and top right. Red oxide mixed with black to achieve a brown sealer. top left the (Sealer)was intentionally sprayed heavier like what would/could happen when painting in pieces. both have two coats, but notice the huge color differences.

the bottom left was a mix of red, black and grey also a shade of "Brown". bottom rightis a grey sealer, coverage is less than the similar color sealer to the top coat, but was easier to recreate a uniform color prior to base.

4 coats over grey sealer, we have a winner. pics with No clear.

4 coats over sealer?? Is that where you are at now? Looks like it saved you three coats?? gate looks good, I like that color.. Would look good on a street rod..

Yes 4 coats. But when sprayed over just a black and white spray out still took 6 coats to completely cover the harsh black/white transition in the sun. But with the solid Grey substrate I can get away with 4.
