Shot a spray out card to check coverage. Well thought it was covered under the garage lighting. 5 coats.

Took it out in sun to double check. Nope. Looks like it will need two more coats.
7 total to full coverage. Is that normal?

I did not spray my sealer (grey) on the card.

Any tips

I have seen this on a few colors, mostly if a color is meant to have a lot of depth and has transparent toners.. I've seen a few blues like this.. I did a 2-tone mustang that was blue about 10 years ago that really comes to mind.. I painted the car and when I pulled it outside you could see through it,, pulled it back in and it looked great.

I sprayed a few solid test panels. And cover in 3 coats. But not full coverage and probably effect actual color.

It does make me want to play with different color sealers to get differences of color in the sun .

If you can see any under color thru the base coat that means you don't have enough coverage and it could give you problems down the road, like if you have to touch-up something or you could have a blotchy looking job when you pull it outside in the sun.

There are quite a few that are poor hiding colors Yellow being one of the worst alot of green metalics and alot of red metalics are bad too at least with Dupont's Chromabase you really want to use the value shade sealers to keep the coats down and at the price of the base extra coats add up real quick. I just did a rear bumper for a 2012 Cruze and the met. red was $113 a pint just for the basecoat so 1 coat of SPI red epoxy was used for the value shade sealer much cheeper then an extra pint of color.

7 coats is full coverage on a card with no sealer. With black sealer vs Grey their is a significant color difference on the forth coat, much darker but on the 6th coat their just about perfect. But im looking for the true color.

Ford must be using a similar color primer for this color, with the illusion of the actual color. it's much lighter than my spray out card
Of seven coats to hide the black/white.
Will see it comes out in the end. It's being painted in pieces.

This will be one of pain in the ass jobs.

Sounds like it.. painting a color like this in pieces would worry me, but it's still probably the best way to go.

Yeah, it worries me to say the least. Just don't have any other options. I might save the cab and doors for last and hang the doors and put on the final coat. But I know hanging 4 doors, somethings bound to get jacked up.

I'll post some when I get some color on my actual parts instead of messing around with spray outs.

Yes, in the picture you can see the checkers coming through on the far edge. I also tried de nibbing the 3 Rd coat to see how 1000 grit would show up. Even with 5 coats in the sun on the flop. You can see it clear as day. .

Doing a pure full coverage sprayout is a great idea. Now what can be done if desired is to find a ground coat or sealer color that will help achieve the "illusion" of full coverage. Say for instance you think you have found the right shade of light gray or similarly shaded solid color, make another test panel or a group of three panels with one coat of the ground coat and maybe 3,4, and 5 coats of metallic. Do make sure to clear them all because this affects appearance. Then you can carefully compare these new panels to the standard full coverage panel and see if an alternate method with fewer coats can be used. Seven coats is a lot of basecoat! Too much if you ask me.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to have to use a sealer to achieve this. And yes 7 is a lot.

What brand paint? What is the mix ratio? I've seen some major companies also place a warning and note in their formulas to reduce only 50% on particular colors

Pro spray. 1:1

The first coat literally looks like clear sprayed from a dirty cup with metallic mixed in.

I was using a 1.3 might try a 1.4 to see if it helps. I'll play with mixing sealers to help. 7 coats is just crazy.

I didn't ask. Got it from Chad.s

I called a rep from pro spray before I order the paint. I was concerned about color match painting in pieces. He did mention some pearl(s) but not to unusual of a mix.

And didn't even think about coverage I thought 4 when I seen it in person, but never thought 7

I didn't realize you got from us.. Let me check the formula, there may be a easy solution to get you better coverage.. how much do you have.
