6h training

What exactly is this Jim? A course on using 3m products, or....?

no this is for your epa cert for the 6H rule. nothing to do with 3m they are just offering the training video and cert through their website so you don't have to take some class somewhere.

I have been through two of them and should be getting my exemption in a week or two. First was from a jobber, it took 20 min. (waste of time with bad info). Second was by the EPA and it was much much better. They knew the answers to everyone's questions.

funny AAE, when this thing first started i had painters tell me the epa didn't know what they were doin. They would ask all different questions and they got the deer in the headlights look back at them. guess they got it all figure out now! typical government i suppose.

AFIK, glasurit, rm, all akzo products, are all exempt from the rule, so if you are using them you are excluded. They only have 1 tint that contains the HAPS this rule is after...that tint has been fixed. Seems like thats what will eventually happen across the board....essentially making this rule void, unless you are dupont with pages of them you have to fix! what will they do then.

you have to apply for the exemption, it's not automatic. When did RM get compliant? As of last Oct. they had no plans of changing from what I was told. Next the companies will work on lowering the voc content and there won't be a need for waterborne.

Is it much of a hassle to file for an exemption? Also what basecoat system are you using AAE?

I started doing mobile work and I use Spies, and as far as I know only one of their tints is on the HAPS list, makes me wonder if I can still file for an exemption.

The rest of the stuff I use is all SPI, anyone knows if SPI has any of this HAPS crap to worry about?

And speaking of 3M and their PPS system, I'm currently using their 3oz liners and most of the times they're ok, other times they're just too damn small.

Hmm i thought they were on track to do it. I read on basf webiste now that they are encouraging you NOT to exempt from the rule based on this.

Jorge, You cant file for exemption unless you have documentation from the particular company stating all their products do not contain the targeted haps, and you can only be using their products i believe.

I belive the HAPS are all in the basecoats. but they generalize ALL spraying through a gun as the same thing.....so if you are spraying basecoats that have the targeted haps in the rule, then it doesn't matter what you are spraying (primer, clear) it has to be in compliance of the rule, unless you are exempt as outlined.

I switched from RM to Standox because Standox base is HAPS free now. I sent in every MSDS that I had that involved spraying either through a gun or can. I also wrote a page explanation of what I did, how much it cost and what type of work I do and the amts. of material I use on an average job. The EPA official in charge of approving the exemptions said it was one of the better ones they have seen so far. I will prob. stick with 3oz cups but the exemption is something I can give to my dealers to prove that I am on the up and up. With the exemption, I can use any size cup I want so long as I have an HVLP gun. The process has taken about a month from the time I sent it in.

I will have to do my homework and find out where Spies stands, specially since most people say it's the same as Standox I hope they are going HAPS free.

Did you submit any SPI MSDS at all AAE?

Thanks for all the great info guys.

what can a garage hobbyist under 6h legally do? anything under a 3oz cup? does my iwata lph 80 not make the cut with a 4 oz cup although i rarely fill it with 3oz?

It looks like the hobbiest is exempt if he sprays two or less cars a year. Using proper spraying equipment, properly filtering outlet air, proper gun cleaning and waste management should be done by all.

Just so you all know, there are no Targeted haps in any of the SPI products, never has been.

Barry

That's very cool to know, are there any HAPS in polyester products?

No, in this end of the business, I would say only some acid etch primers or all and certain yellow tints.

Paint strippers from what I know, don't matter unless you use a high volume of them.

There is a section that is not real clear in that ruling. It says "Individuals that surface coat no more than two motor vehicles or PIECES of mobile equipment. Does mobile equipment include passenger vehicles? So if you paint a mirror does that count as surface coating a vehicle? I have been in close touch with our EPA to get as much info as I can that pertain to my business.

so no haps in that wonderful black paint you no longer produce barry?
